BOXSCORE
Facing the fifth-ranked women's lacrosse team in the country, The College at Brockport trailed 6-4 midway through the second half before falling 10-5 to the Cortland Red Dragons Tuesday afternoon on Brockport Field.
Brockport (3-3 overall, 1-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference) trailed 3-0 after Cortland (8-1, 2-0) scored three times in the first 2:51.
Motondo's second goal of the season got the Green and Gold on the board 4:06 into the game. Cortland, ranked fifth in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III poll, scored a minute after Motondo's goal to take a 4-1 lead.
Toomey converted a free-position shot for her 11th goal of the season with 20:43 left in the first half, and Brown scored her team-leading 14th goal with 17:02 left to pull Brockport within 4-3.
Cortland tacked on a goal 2:42 after Brown's goal, and the teams played a scoreless final 14:18 of the half as the Red Dragons took a 5-3 halftime lead.
The scoreless drought extended over the first 10 minutes of the second before Mary Hartzheim scored the second of her three goals to put Cortland up 6-3. Scordo answered for Brockport, converting a free-position shot to trim the deficit to two, but the Golden Eagles couldn't get any closer.
Cortland, the 12-time SUNYAC champions, scored four consecutive goals over a 3:52 span late in the half to take a 10-4 lead. Piraino scored with 2:31 remaining off a free-position shot, Brockport's third free-position goal of the game, to close out the scoring.
“We did a lot of things today that we wanted to do. Cortland is a good team and we knew that if we were going to beat them, we had to possess the ball, which we did a great job of,” said Linda Michele, Brockport's second-year head coach.
“We had opportunities to finish and we just didn't finish. We had several free-position shots and we didn't put them away. The team fought throughout the whole game and was in a position to win up until the end of the game, so I'm pleased.”
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles, who tied Cortland with 18 shots and forced Cortland into 16 turnovers while committing only 11.
