Freshman Brendon Rothfuss (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and senior Nate Thomas (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each scored twice for The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team but it was not enough on Friday night as Cortland, ranked No. 5 in the most recent national poll, raced to an early lead and handed the Golden Eagles a 16-6 loss in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in Cortland.
Cortland (7-2 Overall, 2-0 SUNYAC) scored six times in the opening quarter including twice in the first 39 seconds of the game to race to an early lead.
Rothfuss closed the gap with two quick goals in the second quarter. The first was unassisted 49 seconds into the quarter and the second was 22 seconds into a man-up situation for the Golden Eagles on a pass from Mike Tammaro (Painted Post, NY/Corning West).
With the score 6-2, Cortland rebounded with five straight goals to take an 11-2 lead before Thomas scored his first of two goals with 1:27 left in the opening half but the Red Dragons added a late goal for a 12-3 halftime lead.
After a scoreless 7:46 of the third quarter, Thomas added the second man-up goal of the night for Brockport with another assist going to Tammaro and freshman Bryon Palmer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) scored less than four minutes later to cut the Cortland lead to 12-5 with 18 minutes left in regulation time.
After two Cortland goals late in the third quarter making the score 14-5, Senior Andy Hilton (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) scored his team-leading 19th goal of the season to make it a 14-6 game but the Red Dragons added two goals in the final six minutes of action for the final score.
Rothfuss led all Brockport scorers with two goals and one assist while Thomas added his two goals and Tammaro recorded two assists.

Kyle Crosley (Clinton, NY/Homer) made 12 saves playing the first three quarters and sophomore
Cory Banwaree (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) was credited with four saves in the final 15 minutes of play.
