Outdoor Track Teams Place Well at Rochester

Senior Ray Lund wins discus, one of five titles won by Brockport

Senior Ray Lund won the discus and placed second in the hammer throw and shot put Saturday.

Senior Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) won the discus and placed second in the hammer throw and shot put for The College at Brockport's outdoor track and field team during Saturday's University of Rochester Alumni Invitational.
 
Lund, who last week provisionally qualified for the NCAA's Division III national championships in the hammer throw during the Hamilton College Continental Invitational, won the discus with an effort of 45.12 meters (148 feet), five feet and eight inches better than the runner-up.
 
Lund, the reigning Brockport Male Athlete of the Week, captured second in both the hammer throw (53.10 meters/174 feet, two inches) and the shot put (14.65 meters/48 feet, 3/4 inches) during the U of R Invitational.

On Monday, Lund and sophomore Nicole Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) were honored by the State University of New York's Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as its Men's and Women's Field Athletes of the Week. Jones, a two-time SUNYAC Field Athlete of the Week, won the shot put for the second straight week. Her effort of 12.09 meters (39 feet, eight inches) was seven feet, 3/4 inches better than the runner-up.
 
Brockport's women placed second while the men were third at the competition. The Golden Eagle women scored 115 points, trailing only host Rochester (142). The Golden Eagle men scored 104 points, trailing only host Rochester (131) and Fredonia (109).
 
Several Golden Eagles posted Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship-qualifying performances Saturday. Senior Brad Frink (Canastota, NY/Canastota) captured the 5,000 meter title, running in an ECAC-qualifying time of 15 minutes, 15.49 seconds, nearly nine seconds faster than the runner-up. Freshman Nate Matthews (Frankfort, NY/Sauquoit Valley) also qualified for ECAC's with a sixth-place finish in the 1,500. Matthews ran in 4:00.92, 3.48 seconds out of first place.
 
Brockport's 400 meter relay team of senior Khalil Jones (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena),junior  Eric Hine (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside), senior Cameron Johnson (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and Zack Hine (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) won in 42.98 seconds, edging the St. Lawrence relay by 0.19 seconds.
 
Sophomore Zach Ferrara (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) placed second in the pole vault with an effort of 4.55 meters. Sophomore Joe Mussler (Hamlin, NY/Hilton) finished third in the 110 hurdles (15.58 seconds), 0.01 seconds out of second place, while Zack Hine was fourth in the 100 (11.35 seconds) and Johnson was fourth in the 400 hurdles (56.81 seconds).
 
For Brockport's women, senior Melissa Scorse (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) qualified for ECAC's with a second-place finish in the 100 dash (12.80 seconds).
 
Junior Becky Fabbiano (Lockport, NY/Lockport) claimed the pole vault title, leaping 3.10 meters (10 feet, two inches), to win in a jump-off over Fredonia's Chelsea Caruso.
 
Seniors Stephanie Powell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) and Stacey Gibbins (Eden, NY/Eden) finished second and third, respectively, in the hammer throw. Powell went 45.67 meters (149 feet, 10 inches) while Gibbins hit 43.61 meters (143 feet, one inch). Jones was second in the discus (36.29 meters/119 feet, one inch) while Gibbins was third (34.98 meters/114 feet, nine inches).
 
Sophomore Carly Chefalo (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) was third in the high jump (1.53 meters/5 feet, 1/4 inches).
 
Brockport's 400 relay team of senior Brittany Dodd (Livonia, NY/Webster Thomas), Scorse and freshmen Alissa Kozakiewicz (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Caitlin Moeller (Kingston, NY/Onteora) placed third in 52.05 seconds.
 
Dodd also finished fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.19 seconds), junior Melissa Wassink (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) was fourth in the 1,500 (4:55.38) and freshman Kelly Burke (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) finished fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:10.25).
 
The outdoor track and field teams return to action with the annual Brockport Invitational, starting at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 17 on the Brockport campus.
