Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) pitched another dominant complete game to help The College at Brockport's softball team earn a split of its doubleheader with State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Geneseo Saturday afternoon.
In Game One, Geer pitched a four-hitter and limited Geneseo to one run as the Golden Eagles (12-6 overall, 1-3 SUNYAC) rallied late to pull out a 2-1 victory. Brockport led 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth in Game Two, but ended up dropping a 4-2 decision to the Blue Knights (6-10, 1-3 SUNYAC).
Geneseo struck first in Game One, scoring on an RBI single, and Geneseo seemed poised to tack on more runs after getting runners to first and second with two outs, but Geer induced an inning-ending fly out.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Caitlyn Rena (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa) reached on an error and advanced to second on junior
Meghan Power's (Hagaman, NY/Amsterdam) single. Sophomore
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) moved the runners up to second and third on a sacrifice , and Rana scored on sophomore
Courtney Claflin's (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek) RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-all.
The Blue Knights threatened in the bottom of the sixth when the first two batters singled, but Geer bore down, getting two pop outs and a fly out to end the threat.
The Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the top of the seventh. Freshman
Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) drilled an RBI triple that plated junior
Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) for a 2-1 lead.
Geer retired Geneseo in order in the seventh to improve her record to 8-1 with a sparkling 0.67 earned-run average. Geer has struck out 70 batters in 62 1/3 innings pitched, and has a 10-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (70 to 7).
Brockport struck first in Game Two as Claflin singled with one out in the third inning. Following a pop out, freshman
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) singled, and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Hochman then delivered an RBI single that scored Claflin to put the Green and Gold up 1-0.
The Golden Eagles added a fourth-inning run when, with two outs Claflin hit a single that scored Power to make it 2-0 Brockport.
But the Blue Knights responded with three fourth-inning runs and added a run in the sixth to finish off the scoring.
Freshman
Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) took the loss, allowing four runs — none earned — on six hits over five innings.
The Golden Eagles are back in action with a road doubleheader against the University of Rochester, starting at noon on Sunday.
