Softball Earns Spot in SUNYAC Tournament

Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) had three hits and scored two runs and Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) added three hits and two runs batted in to lead The College at Brockport Softball team to a 5-3 win and a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader split Monday afternoon at Buffalo State. The Bengals won the second game of the twinbill by a 15-3 score. The games were the final regular-season competition and determined the final SUNYAC standings for the upcoming conference tournament.

With the win, Brockport (22-13-1 Overall, 8-9-1) earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament and Buffalo State secured the fifth seed after a tie-breaker procedure was used to break the fourth-place tie between Buffalo State and Geneseo. Cortland is the top seed and will host the double-elimination tournament while Plattsburgh is the No. 2 seed, Fredonia is No. 3 and Geneseo the No. 4 seed. Brockport will play host Cortland in its first-round game Thursday morning in Cortland.

In game one, Brockport took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Stahl opened the game with a single to center field. With two outs, Nowak singled scoring Stahl from second and advanced to second on the throw. Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) followed with a double to push Nowak home for the early lead.

Buffalo State scored a run in the second and another in the third to knot the score at 2-2 but Brockport regained the lead with another two-run inning in the fifth. Caitlyn Rena (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) stated the rally with a one-out single and Stahl followed with an infield hit. Two batters later, pinch hitter Emily Wagner (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) hit a two-out single to left field scoring one run before Nowak doubled to right field scoring another run to give Brockport the 4-2 advantage.

The Bengals trimmed the lead with a single run in the bottom of the fifth before Brockport regained the two-run lead in the sixth. Danielle Sage (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) doubled with one out and pinch runner Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) advanced to third on a ground out. After Meghan Power (Hagaman, NY/Amsterdam) walked, Rena hit an infield single scoring Martin from third.

Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) earned the victory scattering seven hits, allowing three runs and striking out three.

Brockport finished with 12 hits as Stahl and Nowak each contributed three hits to the attack and Nowak led the way with two runs batted in.

Buffalo State jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in game two and led 8-0 after two innings. Brockport scored twice in the third to narrow the gap but the Bengals added seven runs in the fourth inning to take the commanding lead. The Golden Eagles added a single run in the fifth but the game ended due to the eight-run rule after five innings.

Yates led Brockport with two hits and two runs batted in as she clubbed a two-run home run in the third inning.
