The College at Brockport women's tennis team suffered a narrow defeat at Roberts Wesleyan, losing 5-4 to the Raiders in its opening contest of the 2011 season on Thursday.

Freshman Lauren Bohman (Sayville, NY/Sayville) won both of her matches on the day. At No. 5 singles, Bohman beat Julia Vitale 6-4, 7-5. She teamed up with junior Katelyn Richenberg (Stafford, NY/Batavia) to top Julia and Maria Vitale 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Sophomore Ellen Meyers (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) opened up the season on a high note, winning her match at No. 4 singles over Kaylee Eamer 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Jessica Nolan (Stanley, NY/Marcus Whitman) recorded the fourth point of the day for the Golden Eagles. Nolan defeated Maria Vitale at No. 6 singles by the score 7-5, 6-3.

“I thought it was a great match by everyone,” head coach Ben Klempka said. “It was good to see freshman and first-year sophomores step up.”

Meyers and senior Kaitlyn Broderick (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) were edged out at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, by Roberts Wesleyan's Kaylee Eamer and Meg Kelly in the day's closest match.

Brockport has its home opener on Saturday against Alfred University at noon.
