Box Score

The College at Brockport Field Hockey team pulled off a thrilling 1-0 upset over Oneonta Friday night at Brockport Field as the Golden Eagles defeated the Red Dragons in a shootout. Kasey Schreiner (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) carried the Golden Eagles throughout regulation, overtime, and the shootout with a spectacular performance in net for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport improves to 2-1 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and 5-3 overall while Oneonta suffered its first conference loss of the year.

Oneonta entered the game after receiving 62 votes in this past week's NCAA Division III rankings. The Red Dragons dominated much of the first half, but the momentum shifted in the second half as the Golden Eagles found ways to create opportunities for themselves. Schreiner made diving save after diving save on the night to give Brockport a chance. The game remained scoreless after 100 minutes of play.

In the first series of the best-of-five shootout, the Golden Eagles failed to score on their first three attempts. Trailing 1-0, senior Elizabeth Bradshaw (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) converted the team's first goal. Oneonta took the lead on the very next shot, forcing Jessica Blind (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) to score on her attempt. The junior used a deke move to the left and fired a backhanded shot to tie the shootout at 2-2. Schreiner made a kick save on the final Oneonta attempt to send the game into a second best-of-five shootout.

Jackie Massoni (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) converted on the first Brockport attempt to take the early lead. The Red Dragons tied the shootout on their third attempt, but Ashley Elmes (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) put the Golden Eagles up 2-1 with her first score of the shootout. Clinging to the 2-1 lead on Oneonta's final attempt in the 10th round of the stroke off, Schreiner made one last save to give Brockport the exhilarating victory.

In all, Schreiner made a season-high 11 saves on the day, including seven in the first half and three in the two overtime sessions. Schreiner now has four shutouts on the season and has allowed just one goal in three SUNYAC games. Oneonta outshot the Golden Eagles 10-0 in the first half, but the Brockport defense limited the Red Dragons to just one shot in the second half. Brockport put four shots on net in the second half.

The game became a back-and-forth battle in the second half as the Brockport offense came alive, but it was the defense that saved the game and sent the match into overtime. In the final seconds of regulation, Elmes, the last line of defense, made a stonewall defensive stop to force overtime.

In the first overtime period, Blind lifted the Golden Eagles with her offensive presence. The junior created multiple opportunities fighting through double-teams to keep the ball in the Brockport offensive zone.

Schreiner made multiple highlight-reel saves, including a diving save with five minutes remaining in the first overtime. An Oneonta attacker fired a shot on net after Schreiner came out to challenge, but the senior net-minder dove across the cage to keep the game scoreless. Gina Stephan (Clarence, NY/Clarence), who had a defensive save earlier in the game, stopped a one-on-one attack from Oneonta with five seconds to play in the second overtime.

The Golden Eagles, winners of their last two SUNYAC contests, look to keep their winning streak alive as Brockport hosts New Paltz tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 pm on Brockport Field. The game will be the final home contest for seven seniors- Jessica Nasuti (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland), Taryn Rossi (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), Bradshaw, Elmes, Schreiner and Massoni along with junior Danielle Henck (Sauquoit Valley, NY/Sauquoit Valley) who is graduating early.
