Tyrone Nichols (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns and also caught four passes for 92 yards including a 64-yard scoring reception to lead The College at Brockport Football past Morrisville with a 49-21 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory Saturday on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.
The win leaves Brockport at 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the NJAC giving the Golden Eagles a chance for an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Bowl bid. The matchups for ECAC Bowl games will be announced Monday.
Brockport scored once in the first quarter and then added an early second quarter TD and three quick scores late in the first half to take a 35-0 lead into the locker room for the halftime intermission. Nichols scored on a three-yard run midway through the opening quarter to put Brockport up 7-0.
On a drive that started late in the first quarter, junior
Jake Spalik (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) caught a two-yard scoring pass for a 14-0 lead.
The game remained 14-0 until the final minutes of the first half. Senior
Joseph Innes (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) pulled down a three-yard pass in the endzone with less than six minutes remaining to make it a 21-0 Brockport lead. The Golden Eagles then scored on two one-play drives as Nichols took a shuffle pass from senior quarterback
Joe Scibilia (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) and rambled 64 yards for a TD and then on the next Brockport drive, sophomore
Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) caught a 42-yard scoring pass on the first play of the drive with 2:59 left in the half to give Brockport the 35-0 lead.
In the second half, Morrisville (1-9, 1-7 NJAC) scored the only points of the third quarter to finally get on the board as Blake Mosely caught a 13-yard scoring pass from quarterback Jory Tanner to cut the lead to 35-7.
In the final quarter, Spalik added his second TD of the day, catching a 5-yard pass from Scibilia to cap an eight-play drive early in the quarter. With less than six minutes left in the game, Morrisville scored again to trim the lead to 42-14 as Austin Henchey scored the first of two TDs with a two-yard rush.
Nichols added his third score of the game three minutes later with a 14-yard scamper extending the Brockport lead to 49-14 and Morrisville added a late score as Henchey broke free for a 28-yard scoring run for the final score.
Nichols led the running attack with 172 yards while Spalik was the top Brockport receiver with 118 yards on eight receptions and Scibilia finished 18-for-26 for 293 yards and a school-record tying five TD passes in a single game.
Defensively, John O'Hagan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) led the way with 15 tackles while senior
Derek DeCandia (Beacon, NY/Beacon) added 11 stops including nine solo tackles. Freshman
Dan Santos (Bronx, NY/Mt. St. Michael) made his first career start and finished with eight tackles and an interception. Sophomore
Colby Morabito (Rochester, NY/Hilton) continued to dominate the defensive backfield with three pass deflections. The sophomore leads the country in the category.
