Senior
Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) and freshman
Leslie Dempsey (Windsor, NY/Windsor) each had solid complete game pitching performances as The College at Brockport Women's Softball team opened up the 2012 season with two victories on their spring training trip in Lee County, Florida. The Golden Eagles defeated St. Lawrence University in game one 9-1with the mercy rule and Kenyon College in game two 4-2.
Farrell got out of a first inning jam after allowing one run on three walks and one hit to leave the bases loaded. The senior settled down nicely for the remainder of the game by not allowing a single walk for the last four innings. In five innings of work, Farrell allowed just the one run and seven hits and struck out five.
Kayla Ladd (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) went 3-3 and one run batted in.
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) and
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool )had two RBIs apiece. Ladd,
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) and
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored two runs apiece.
Brockport got their scoring going in the second inning.
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) got the team's first hit with two outs. With two runners on, Ladd singled to right to bring in Arnold and Hochman. Ladd later scored on an infield single by Rana. Yates got on base to start the third inning and used a heads up play to advance to second. Yates manufactured the only run of the inning on her own after advancing back-to-back wild pitches to cross the plate.
The Golden Eagles put together another three run inning in the fourth. Ladd led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Yates. Dumas drove in Rana and
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) with a single up the middle. Brockport added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the eight-run mercy rule.
In game two, Dempsey sat down six of the first seven Kenyon batters with two strikeouts and four pop ups as the ball never left the infield through the first two innings. Brockport crossed home plate for the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning as
Meghan Power (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) singled to bring home Dumas. The Golden Eagles tacked on two more as Dumas doubled to left field to collect two more RBIs on the day.
Kenyon scored two runs on two hits in the top of the fifth to cut Brockport's lead to one, but the Golden Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Dempsey took control in the sixth and seventh inning allowing just one hit in each inning to earn her first collegiate win.
In seven innings, Dempsey struck out six batters and allowed two runs on six hits. Power and
Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) each had multi-hit games.
Brockport continues their busy stretch in Florida with a doubleheader tomorrow. The Golden Eagles take on Finlandia University at 9:00 am and Nichols College at 11:00 am.
