Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) reached base five times in two games and made several spectacular plays in centerfield as The College at Brockport Women's Softball team took two victories on the day in Lee County, Florida. Brockport defeated Lasell College 12-0 in five innings and won game two 3-2 against NYU Poly Tech. The Golden Eagles are now 5-1 on the season.
Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) had another strong pitching performance to earn the victory in game one. The Golden Eagles used the mercy rule to beat the Lasers in five innings, their second mercy rule win in three days. Farrell pitched four of the five innings and allowed just two hits and struck out four batters to just two walks. The senior improved to 2-1 on the season and has allowed just two earned runs in the three games. Rana walked three times in the game and scored two runs.
Rana scored the first run of the game in the first inning when
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) doubled to the right center wall. Brockport's big inning came in the third as the Golden Eagles put together seven runs on four hits. The first five batters of the inning reached base and scored.
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) drove in two runs with a drive to right field and later scored to top of the inning.
The Golden Eagles tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston), who went 3-3 with three RBIs yesterday against Nichols added another RBI single in the inning.
Jaritza Aviles (New York, NY/High School of Economics and Finance) came in to finish off the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Leslie Dempsey (Windsor, NY/Windsor) got the start in game two against NYU Poly Tech. Brockport failed to score in the first inning for the first time in three games. NYU got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the third after a leadoff single and a double. Another double drove in the two runs.
Brockport got a run back in the top of the fourth after Hochman hit a hard shot off the second baseman's glove that rolled into the right field foul territory to drive in
Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) who was pinch running for
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) after Dumas reached on a single. Brockport evened up the score in the top of the fifth. Rana lined a shot right past the NYU pitcher to lead off the inning.
Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) reached on an error that allowed Rana to advance to third base. Dumas than drove a pitch to right field that was caught but Rana scored on the sacrifice fly.
With a runner on third base and two outs in the NYU fifth, Rana tracked down a fly ball to deep right centerfield to save a run from coming in. Brockport carried the momentum to the top of the sixth to add their third run. The Golden Eagles got two runners by walks and Rana came through once again. With two outs, the junior drove another pitch right past the pitcher to drive in
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) who was pinch running for
Kayla Ladd (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) for the go-ahead run. Rana made another solid running grab in the sixth and caught the final out of the game as Brockport earned the victory.
Dempsey went all seven innings for her second career victory. The freshman gave up six hits and struck out five and allowed just one base on balls.
Brockport has an off-day tomorrow but return to action on Wednesday afternoon with a 3:00 pm game against Ohio Wesleyan and a 5:00 pm game against Mount Mary College.
