Senior
Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) and freshman
Leslie Dempsey (Windsor, NY/Windsor) both picked up victories on Thursday for The College at Brockport Women's Softball team as the Golden Eagles improved to 9-1 on the year. Brockport defeated New Jersey City University in game one 7-4 and Salem State in game two 2-1.
Farrell went the distance in the first game of the day to improve to 4-1 on the year. The senior gave up back-to-back home runs in the first inning, the first allowed by Brockport all season, but was able to control the damage. The senior spread out seven hits and allowed three earned runs on the day. She struck out six batters to just two walks.
While Brockport allowed their first home run of the season, they also hit their first home run of the year.
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led off the top of the second inning with a shot to centerfield for the team's first run.
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) and
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) both were credited with RBI singles in the inning as Brockport took a 3-2 lead. New Jersey City scored twice in their half of the third inning to regain the lead 4-3.
Brockport came back with a big inning in the top of the fourth.
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) singled and
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) smacked a double to left field to put two runners in scoring position. Arnold grounded out but Hochman was able to score the tying run. Ferchen drove in Rosenbarker after putting the ball in play and reaching base on a throwing error. Ferchen later scored on a passed ball and
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored on a
Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas) single. Farrell gave up just three hits over the final four innings as Brockport pulled out the victory.
As the trend has gone thus far this season, Dempsey followed Farrell with a stellar pitching performance in game two. The freshman has gotten off to a strong start this season and recorded her fourth victory of the year against Salem State. Three of Dempsey's four victories have been decided by a total of four runs as she has pitched complete games all three times.
Salem State scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a leadoff homerun. Brockport managed just three singles in the first three innings until
Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) came through with a home run to straight away centerfield in the fourth to put the Golden Eagles on the board. Rana got her second of three hits on the day in the fifth inning with a leadoff single. Stahl followed with a single and
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) moved the runners over with a bunt. Dumas then singled to left field to bring in Rana with the go-ahead run.
Dempsey allowed one hit in the fifth and one in the sixth and ended the game in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning on a groundout and two infield pop-ups. Dempsey walked just one batter and struck out three while scattering six hits.
Meghan Power (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) went 2-3 on the day and Rana finished with a 3-4 day. Rana has reached base in all 10 games this season and has hit safely in seven of them. Power has had a hit in all five games she has played in this season.
The Golden Eagles wrap up their spring training trip with a final doubleheader on Friday. Brockport takes on Wisconsin Lutheran College at 1:00 pm and North Park University (IL) at 3:00 pm.
