Senior Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) pitched her first career no-hitter on Friday afternoon and it proved to be much-needed as The College at Brockport Women's Softball team edged out a 1-0 extra-inning victory over Wisconsin-Lutheran. The Golden Eagles also took game two of their doubleheader, defeating North Park 6-4.

The Golden Eagles managed just two hits on the day but Farrell managed to keep her opponents hitless. The senior allowed two runners to reach base in the first inning due to a hit by pitch and a walk, but stayed on point for the remainder of the game. Farrell is now 5-1 on the year and has allowed just five earned runs in her six starts, including three scoreless starts.

Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had a first inning single and Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) had a sixth inning single as she extended her streak of consecutive games reaching base to 11. Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) reached base on a fifth inning walk.

Other than those three runners, Brockport failed to put a player on base until extra innings. Farrell struck out two in the top half of the seventh inning to give her team a chance in the bottom half but could not bring a runner home.

By rule of the international tiebreaker, a runner automatically is placed on second base to start extra innings. Wisconsin-Lutheran used a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to third, but a second sacrifice bunt failed as Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) made a heads-up defensive play to nab the runner from third trying to score as Arnold applied the tag. In Brockport's half, Arnold started out on second but was relieved for Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta). Ferchen advanced to third on a wild pitch and Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) came up to bat as a pinch-hitter. Yates drove a pitch to shallow right-center that was caught but Ferchen used her speed and slid under the tag for the game-winning run.

In game two, the Golden Eagles used a big first inning to set the tone of the game against North Park. With one out, Brockport put six straight hitters on base, four whom scored. Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas), Yates, Dumas, and Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) all scored in the inning. Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) smacked a double off the right field fence to drive in two.

Brockport put on two more runs in the third inning after Hochman led off with a double and Ferchen got on with a single. Rana reached base for the twelfth straight game with a double and has hit safely in nine of the 12 games this season.

After North Park got three runners on base and scored a run to start the inning, starting pitcher Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) was relieved by freshman Leslie Dempsey (Windsor, NY/Windsor). One more run scored but Dempsey was able to get out of the inning as Brockport held onto the lead. North Park went down 1-2-3 in the sixth and put two runners on base in the seventh until Dempsey ended the game with back-to-back flyouts.

Flemming went 3 1/3 innings and Dempsey was credited with the win to improve to 4-0. Hochman and Ferchen both had multi-hit games.

The Golden Eagles conclude their spring training trip in Lee County, Florida with an 11-1 record. Brockport is off until March 30 when they take on the Cortland Red Dragons for their first conference matchup of the year.
