Emily Zartman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) scored a seaon-high four goals and tied her season-high with five points as The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse team defeated Nazareth College on Saturday, 16-12. Brockport is now 4-1 on the year.
Zartman, who has now tallied five points in back-to-back games, scored two goals in the first half and two in the second to keep the Golden Flyers out of reach.
Dayna Piraino (Syracuse, NY/Henniger) had six points on the day with three goals and three assists. Piraino has now registered five points in four of the team's five games this season.
Brockport used another strong first half to control the tempo of the game with 11 goals. Brockport led Nazareth 11-7 at halftime on Saturday.
Brockport is outscoring its' opponents 55-30 in the first half this year and have led at halftime in four of the five games. The Golden Eagles are averaging 17.4 goals per game.
After an early goal by Nazareth to open up the game,
Katie Sullivan (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker),
Karen Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), and
Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) scored three straight goals to take the lead. Bianchi and Maguire both converted on free position attempts.
Following a second Nazareth goal, Brockport once again scored three straight goals. This time,
Erin Featherstone (Tully, NY/Tully),
Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson), and
Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) contributed to the run. Zartman scored the next two Brockport goals, assisted by Bianchi and Piraino. Bianchi scored her second goal of the game at the 3:45 mark of the first half and Piraino scored just 47 seconds later to give Brockport some breathing room at halftime.
Nazareth scored three of the first four goals of the second half to fight back to a 12-10 deficit, but for the third time in the game, the Golden Eagles went on a three-goal spree. Scordo found the back of the net for the second time with 21:32 remaining and Zartman scored one minute later. Both teams went scoreless for the next six minutes until Zartman scored her 14th goal of the season to put Brockport up 15-10. Piraino scored Brockport's final goal with 6:54 remaining.
Both
Hannah O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) and
Bree Galloway (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) saw time in net for the Golden Eagles. O'Connor, who has played a majority of the minutes this year, picked up the win in 15 minutes of action. Galloway played a season-high 45 minutes in net and stopped seven shots.
Bianchi picked up a team-high five ground balls and won a team-high five draw controls. The senior also connected on both of her free-position attempts on the day. As a whole, Brockport outshot Nazareth 36-23 and grabbed 30 ground balls compared to the Golden Flyers' 16.
Brockport opens up its' State University of New York Athletic Conference slate of the schedule on March 31 with a home contest against Potsdam with a 1:00 pm start time.
