Junior Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and senior Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) each had two hits for The College at Brockport Softball team in game one of a doubleheader Friday against #19 ranked Cortland but the Red Dragons won a close 3-1 game. Cortland scored 11 runs in the third inning of the nightcap for an 18-4 victory and a sweep of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) openers for each team in Cortland.

After three scoreless innings, Cortland (14-4 overall, 2-0) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with three consecutive singles. In the top of the fifth inning, Brockport (11-2, 0-2) had its best chance to put some runs on the board. Rana, Courtney Claflin (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek) and Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each singled to start the inning and load the bases. A fielder's choice play caused the first out of the inning as Rana was thrown out in a force play at the plate before Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) was hit by pitch forcing a run in from third base. A second fielder's choice play resulted in the second out of the inning as pinch runner Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) was thrown out at home. A ground out ended the inning and the Brockport rally with the bases loaded.

Cortland scored twice with two outs in the bottom half of the inning to take the 3-1 lead.

In game two, Brockport scored in the top of the first inning to take the early lead but Cortland answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Golden Eagles scored another run in the top of the third inning to trim the lead to 3-2 but the Red Dragons exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the inning to take the commanding lead. Cortland added four more runs in the fourth inning and Kayla Ladd (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) connected on a two-run homer in the fifth inning for the Golden Eagles.
