Strong Start Falls Short against No. 2 Cortland

The Golden Eagles trailed just 3-2 after one period of play

The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest to the No. 2 nationally ranked Cortland Red Dragons on Saturday afternoon by the score of 17-3. The Golden Eagles fall to 5-7 overall on the year and 1-2 in the conference while Cortland's record remains unblemished at 12-0 and 4-0 in the conference.

The Golden Eagles started off strong in the first quarter as Cortland led just 3-2 after the first 15 minutes. In the first quarter, the Brockport offense stayed with the Red Dragons. Brockport fired 10 shots compared to Cortland's 11. The Golden Eagles also committed fewer turnovers and collected more ground balls than their opponents.

Matt Andon-McLane (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham), who was honored before the game for Senior Day, scored the games' first goal 6:01 into the first period to give Brockport an early lead. The Red Dragons answered back just 16 seconds later and added another goal three minutes later. Brockport tied the game up again on a goal by Riley Austin (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) before Cortland took a 3-2 lead before the start of the second quarter.

Cortland's defense took control in the second quarter, limiting the Golden Eagles to just three shots in the second frame as Brockport went scoreless for the remainder of the half. The Golden Eagles managed just four shots in both the third and fourth quarters as the team was outshot 52-21 on the day. Brockport's third and final goal of the game came with 2:48 remaining in the third period as Brendon Rothfuss (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) found the back of the net.

For Brockport, five other seniors were honored prior to the start of the game. Remmington Fox (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), Brian Witmer (Oswego, NY/Oswego), Nate Thomas (Cortland, NY/Cortland), Brad Weber (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili), and Joe Matison (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) were recognized for their efforts as a Golden Eagle.

The Golden Eagles travel to Plattsburgh on Saturday, April 21for another SUNYAC matchup.
