Freshman
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) of The College at Brockport Softball team came through in the clutch in game one against Plattsburgh on Saturday as the two teams split a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader. Brockport took game one 2-0 and dropped the nightcap 5-4.
The two teams played a scoreless game up until the top of the fifth inning when Ferchen came up to bat with two runners on. The freshman doubled to left center to drive in the only two runs of the game.
Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburgh), who tossed a shutout against Potsdam yesterday, threw a complete game without allowing a run to improve to 7-1 on the year. The sophomore allowed just three hits and walked just one batter while striking out three.
Fleming allowed just one walk and two singles through the first four innings and left a runner stranded on third base to end the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Eagles' bats were limited through the first four frames as well, as
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) reached on a first inning walk and
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) singled in the second, but Brockport went down 1-2-3 in the third and fourth.
With one out in the fifth, Yates singled to center field for her second hit of the day.
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) then walked but Erika Lazzarro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) entered to pinch run. The next batter, Ferchen, drove a pitch to left center for a two run double to give Fleming all the run support she needed. Only two batters for Plattsburgh reached base over the final three innings as the Golden Eagles carried out the victory.
Yates finished the day a perfect 3-3, including a double in the seventh inning. Ferchen and
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) were the only other Golden Eagles to receive a hit.
Brockport fell behind early in game two as Plattsburgh built a 3-0 lead through the first two innings as senior
Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) got the start. The Golden Eagles got their first run of the game after
Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) doubled in the top of the third. Martin advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rana and then scored on a wild pitch.
A homerun in the bottom half of the third by Plattsburgh built the Cardinals' lead to 4-1, but Brockport responded in the top of the fourth with three runs of their own. Ferchen came to bat with two outs after Rosenbarker was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ferchen put the ball in play and resulted in an error by the third baseman to bring in Yates and
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon). Rana came to bat with two runners in scoring position and hit a single to drive in Rosenbarker and knot the score at four.
Brockport had their chance to take the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Yates and Ferchen sparked the offense again with singles. After a fielder's choice and a stolen base by Martin, Brockport put runners on second and third but failed to bring in a run.
The two runners left on base proved to be crucial for Brockport as Plattsburgh scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Dumas reached on a fielding error in the seventh for Brockport but the Golden Eagles failed to tie the game.
The Golden Eagles are now 4-6 in the SUNYAC while Plattsburgh goes to 9-3 and remain in second place in the conference.
