Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) netted three goals, including two late second-half goals but The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse team fell one goal short to the Fredonia State Blue Devils, dropping the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest 11-10 Tuesday.
Brockport, trailing 8-5 at halftime, made a furious comeback in the second half. The Golden Eagles limited the first-place Blue Devils to just three second half goals and eventually tied the game at nine with 8:44 to play. After two Blue Devil goals, Brown, this week's SUNYAC Player of the Week, scored her third goal to cut the score to 11-10, but the Golden Eagles failed to score in the final five minutes of play.
Fredonia State jumped out to a 4-1 lead with Brockport's lone goal coming from
Nina Tassone (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Brockport then went on a three goal run, including Brown's first goal of the game with 11:07 remaining in the half to tie the score at four all. Both teams traded the next two goals but the Blue Devils closed out the half on a 3-0 run.
Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) scored on an unassisted goal two minutes into the second half. The game went scoreless for the next nine minutes until
Erin Featherstone (Tully, NY/Tully) converted a free position shot. After a Fredonia State goal,
Dayna Piraino (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) and Brown scored the next two goals to even the game at nine. The Blue Devils scored just 32 seconds after Brown's goal, and added another three minutes later.
Brown scored with 5:18 on the clock to get within one, but time ran out for the Golden Eagles. As if the score itself was not close enough, the two teams were separated by just one shot with Fredonia edging out Brockport 26-25. The Blue Devils made 13 saves while Brockport stopped 12 shots and the Blue Devils grabbed 30 ground balls to Brockport's 25 in an evenly matched game between two of the top three teams in the SUNYAC.
Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) had five ground balls and added one assist on the day while causing three turnovers.
Bree Galloway (Baldwinsvile, NY/C.W. Baker) played all 60 minutes in net and received her first loss of the season.
Brockport's only two conference losses have come to the top two teams in the conference with their other loss coming against nationally ranked Cortland, a 17-11 defeat on April 3. Brockport has two SUNYAC games remaining, an April 24 date with Buffalo State and against Oneonta on April 28.
