Senior
Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) went a perfect 3-3 in a game two victory as The College at Brockport Softball team split a doubleheader with Oneonta State on Friday. The Golden Eagles took game two by the score of 6-3, but dropped game one in a pitcher's duel, 1-0. Brockport moves into a tie for fifth place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) with Fredonia and New Paltz at 5-7.
Nowak had a hit in each at bat in the second game and scored two runs while driving in one other run. Nowak was part of a three-run fifth inning as the Golden Eagles broke a 3-3 tie. The senior doubled and later scored to help avoid a sweep.
Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) pitched six innings of relief and didn't allow a run to earn her eighth victory of the year.
Oneonta scored three first inning runs off of Brockport starting pitcher
Leslie Dempsey (Windsor, NY/Windsor). The Golden Eagles got a run back in the bottom half of the first inning.
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) walked with two outs. Back-to-back singles by
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) and
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) and a throwing error allowed to Dumas to cross the plate.
Brockport put up a run in the second as Nowak scored on a bases loaded single by
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) and tied the game up in the third when Nowak singled to score
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia).
The game remained tied until Brockport opened up the game in the fifth. Nowak's double put Arnold on third who then scored on a bunt by
Jessica Stahl (Brockport, NY/Aquinas). Nowak scored on a groundout by
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) and Stahl was driven home with a double by
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). Farrell allowed one hit in the sixth and sat down three straight Red Dragons in the seventh, including two straight strikeouts to end the game.
The day started off in different fashion for the Golden Eagles as the team failed to score a run in game one. Sophomore
Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg), this week's Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and SUNYAC Pitcher of the week, allowed just one run, a sixth inning homerun. It is just the first earned run in the last three starts for Fleming who posted back-to-back complete game shutouts last week. The sophomore struck out seven and did not issue a walk on the day.
Brockport had chances to score early on, including the second inning where the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with no outs. A force out at home and a double play ended the threat. Two runners were left in scoring position in the fourth and had a runner on in the seventh but failed to tie the game. Hochman was the lone Golden Eagle with multiple hits in game one, going 2-3.
The three teams tied for fifth are just behind fourth place Geneseo who sits at 6-6. Geneseo split with New Paltz on Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles host New Paltz tomorrow afternoon for a conference doubleheader set to begin at 12:00 pm.
