Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) tossed a two-hit, 16 strikeout performance against the University of Rochester as The College at Brockport Softball team defeated the Yellowjackets 1-0 in game two of a nonconference doubleheader. The Golden Eagles dropped game one 12-2 and now have a 23-11 overall record.
After just one strikeout for the Yellowjackets in game one, Farrell sat down 16 batters in game two to tie a Brockport school record previously held by
Stephanie Geer. The complete game shutout is Farrell's third shutout of the year including games shortened by the Mercy Rule. The senior also pitched an eight-inning no-hitter to win 1-0 against Wisconsin Lutheran on March 16. Farrell's previous career-high in strikeouts was 12 against Macalester College on March 14, 2010.
Rochester scored five first inning runs off Brockport starting pitcher
Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) to pull away early.
Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) doubled in the bottom of the first inning to score
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) and
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Rochester added three more runs to their lead in the top of the second and lead 10-2 in the top of the third. The Yellowjackets scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth to finish off Brockport in the five-inning game.
The Golden Eagles gave Farrell all the run support she would need in the bottom of the first inning of game two.
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) singled to left center field with one out and advanced to third on a double by Dumas. The next batter, Hochman, flew out to right field but was deep enough to score Yates on the sacrifice fly.
Farrell struck out the first batter of the game and got the third out of the first on a strikeout. The senior then struck out the side in the second inning and added two strikeouts in both the third and the fourth before striking out three in the fifth.
Farrell closed out the game in the seventh with back-to-back strikeouts to tie the record. Four Yellowjackets struck out twice and one struck out three times. Along with the two hits allowed, Farrell issued just two walks.
Yates and Dumas both went 2-3 in game two as Brockport collected six hits in the nightcap.

Fredonia is 6-8 and in sixth place while Buffalo State is in third with a 9-5 record.
