Box Score

Junior Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) carried The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse team into the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament, scoring a goal with two seconds left on the clock to give the Golden Eagles a 15-14 victory over the Oneonta Red Dragons. The two teams were fighting for one of the final two playoff spots in the tournament.

The Golden Eagles led for the majority of the game and never trailed. Brockport led by as many as five goals early in the second half, but Oneonta battled back and eventually tied the game with 13 seconds to play. Maguire won the ensuing draw control and sprinted down field to provide the heroics, scoring her 29th goal of the season and vaulting the team into the playoffs.

The Golden Eagles scored the games' first three goals, including a free position goal by Maguire. The remainder of the first half proved to be a back-and-forth struggle. Oneonta tied the game up at five with 14:26 to play. Emily Zartman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) scored three of the games' next five goals as Brockport closed out the first half on a 4-1 run.

Nina Tassone (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) both scored in the opening minutes of the second half to give Brockport an 11-6 advantage. Following an Oneonta goal and a score from Dayna Piraino (Syracuse, NY/Henninger), the Red Dragons netted three straight goals to cut their deficit to two.

Maguire ended the Oneonta run with a goal at the 14:45 mark on an assist from Piraino, but Oneonta responded with two scores of their own as Brockport led 13-12 with just under four minutes to play. Maguire found the back of the net once again to put Brockport up by two. The Red Dragons were able to score two goals in the span of 1:01 to bring the game to a tie, the first since 15:34 left in the first half.

Maguire then won the draw control and used her speed to dodge defenders and score her third straight goal for the victory. The junior scored four goals on seven shots on the day and won a team-high three draw controls. Zartman finished the game with three goals and one assist. Piraino, Brown, and Karen Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) each had two goals on the day as well for the Golden Eagles. Hannah O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) stopped 12 shots in 60 minutes of action to register the victory.

Brockport will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face the top seeded Cortland Red Dragons at Cortland on Friday, May 4. In Brockport's only regular season meeting against the No. 2 Red Dragons, the Golden Eagles fell 17-11 on April 3. The other semifinal matchup will see the second seed Fredonia Blue Devils and third seeded Buffalo State.
