Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) and junior
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) both hit homeruns in separate games as The College at Brockport Softball team split a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games with Geneseo on Saturday afternoon. Geneseo took game one in a slugfest, 11-9 and the Golden Eagles used the mercy rule in game two, winning 9-1 in six innings.
Arnold went 2-3 in game one with three runs batted in and two runs scored. The sophomore belted a homerun in the bottom half of the fourth inning to drive in Megan Power (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) to tie the game at three.
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had two hits in the game and drove in two runs.
Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) took the loss in the game after going five and one-third innings and allowing seven hits but just three earned runs.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early as Geneseo opened up the game with a two-run homerun in the top of the first. The Knights added one more run in the top of the fourth until Yates drove in a run on a groundout and Arnold's homerun tied the game. Geneseo came back with two runs in the top of the fifth. Brockport attempted to keep the game close as Dumas doubled to left field to score
Courtney Claflin (Lacona, NY/Sandy Creek). The Golden Eagles stranded two runners to end the inning trailing 5-4.
Geneseo capitalized on multiple Brockport errors in the sixth inning aiding them to their five-run frame. In the bottom of the sixth, Yates led off with a double to start the inning. The next batter, Arnold, doubled as well to drive in Yates.
Jessica Stahl (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) then singled to shallow centerfield to drive in Arnold.
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) then singled for the fourth consecutive hit to start the inning and chased off Geneseo starting pitcher Mary Bostwick. After recording one out, Geneseo relief pitcher Alexa Salzman walked back-to-back batters to bring in one more run and
Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) hit a sacrifice fly to score Ferchen.
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) hit Brockport's third double of the inning to drive in Claflin for her second run of the game.
Trailing 11-9, Brockport threatened in the seventh after Arnold reached on a walk and Ferchen reached on an error by the third baseman, but the Golden Eagles failed to bring in another run.
The Golden Eagles kept the offense alive in game two as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Nowak doubled to drive in
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Hochman popped a ball up to the outfield and was dropped by the leftfielder to score Nowak.
Leading 2-1, Brockport pulled away in the fourth with a three run inning.
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell doubled off the leftfield wall and Stahl scored Yates on a single up the middle. Rana scored Rosenbarker on a single and Stahl scored the third run of the inning ona sacrifice fly by Power.
Yates provided two more runs in the fifth after hitting her first homerun of the season to deep centerfield to drive in
Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego). The Golden Eagles didn't register a hit in the seventh inning but used two walks, two hit by pitches, and a wild pitch to score two runs as
Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) scored the games' final run on a wild pitch as Geneseo was trying to intentionally walk Hochman.
Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) earned the win in game two, improving to 4-1 on the year. The sophomore scattered eight hits and walked just two batters while striking out three. Stahl had her first three-hit game of the season to pace the Brockport offense.
The Golden Eagles record now sits at 15-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Brockport takes on RIT on Wednesday, April 11 for a nonconference doubleheader.
