The College at Brockport Softball team stayed alive in an elimination game in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament with a win after losing their first game of the day. The Golden Eagles defeated the Oswego Lakers in a wild finish 10-8 to play another day. Brockport fell to Plattsburgh 3-1 in a pitcher's duel earlier in the afternoon.
Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) got the win in game two.
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) hit a solo homerun to left field to score Brockport's only run against Plattsburgh. Arnold came back in game two by going 2-2 with a walk, one run batted in, and one run.
Meghan Power (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) and
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) also had two hits apiece in game two.
Jean Farrell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) took the loss in game one, but picked up the save in game two.
Game one saw the top two strikeout leaders in the SUNYAC this season as Plattsburgh's Ashley Marshall entered the game with 220 and Farrell came in with 117. Marshall didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, but Farrell allowed base-runners in each inning yet managed to get out of trouble each time. Plattsburgh stranded seven runners in the first three innings.
The Cardinals came into the bottom of the fourth and received a homerun from Megan Price with two outs to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead. Brockport failed to score in the fifth, but built off of a solid double-play in the bottom of the fifth as Yates flipped to
Amy Nowak (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) who made the throw to first in time to end the inning. Brockport used that momentum as Arnold led off the sixth with her third home run of the year. Plattsburgh came back in the bottom of the sixth though and added two runs of their own as Brockport failed to score in the seventh.
The Golden Eagles entered the second game of the day against Oswego, who also lost their first game earlier in the day but to the top seeded Cortland Red Dragons. Fleming got the start on the mound for Brockport and allowed one run in the top of the first and the second. Brockport came back with a run in the bottom half of the second and added one more in the third. Arnold drove in
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) to score Brockport's first run. Nowak then provided a sacrifice fly to score
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) to tie the score.
Brockport took the lead in the fourth as Ferchen used her speed once again to round the bases. The freshman reached on an error then stole second but made it to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Power then singled to score Ferchen for a 3-2 lead. Brockport had an opportunity for more runs in the inning but stranded two runners and Power was thrown out at home.
The game got out of control in the bottom of the sixth inning as Brockport scored seven runs to give themselves an apparent comfortable lead. Power singled with one out to start the offense, and Arnold followed up with a walk.
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) then walked to load the bases. With two outs, Yates smacked a single to right field to bring in two runs.
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) then singled two bring around two more as Brockport set into cruise control.
Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) scored on a single by
Liz Hochman (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) and
Amy Nowak provided the final damage with a two-out, two-run home run.
With Brockport holding a solid seven run lead, Oswego came up to bat in the top of the seventh for the final chance of advancing. After four straight singles and three runs scored with two outs, Fleming was relieved by Farrell. The senior allowed a two-run double, but was able to get the final out on a strike out as Brockport survived.
The Golden Eagles will take on the loser of No. 2 seed Plattsburgh and No. 3 seed Geneseo tomorrow at 1:00 pm at Cortland. The two teams are set to play at 11:00 am tomorrow.
