Nicole Jones (West Chatham, NY/Galway) recorded a team-leading seven kills and also had three blocks for The College at Brockport Volleyball team but Nazareth College used a solid front line attack to defeat the Golden Eagles in three games Wednesday night in the Brockport home opener in Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium in Brockport.
The Golden Flyers (10-7) won the match with game scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-19.
Game one was back and forth scoring for the first several points but with Nazareth leading 10-9, the Golden Flyers scored seven of the next eight points with two runs to push ahead 17-10 and went on to the 25-16 win in the opener.
Brockport (4-14) jumped out to an early lead, 6-1 in the second game but Nazareth battled back and for four straight points in one run to tie the score at 11-11. The Golden Eagles took a 15-13 lead with a
Jaime Snyder (Elmira, NY/Thomas Edison) kill before Nazareth rattled off five of the next six points for an 18-16 lead. Brockport fought back and tied the game at 21-21 with the help of three kills by Jones but Nazareth scored four of the final five points for the close win.
In game three, Nazareth led 6-2 before Brockport came back with two Snyder kills and another by
Hannalee Fordyce (Amityville, NY/Copiague) to tie the game at 6-6. After the Golden Flyers score 10 of the next 12 points, Nazareth led 16-8. After a Brockport time out, the Golden Eagles score three straight points to trim the lead and Jones recorded three more kills down the stretch but Brockport could only get as close as 19-24 before Nazareth ended the match.
Snyder and Fordyce each had six kills and
Chelsea Ross (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) led the team with 13 digs. Jessica Senek (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) registered four blocks and Snyder added three for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport continues a home stretch hosting the Brockport Invitational Tournament over the weekend with Hilbert, Potsdam and Alfred University headed to Brockport for the two-day tournament starting Friday at 5 pm when Brockport faces Hilbert College.
