The College at Brockport Men's Soccer team dropped a hard fought nonconference matchup in double-overtime against St. John Fisher on Wednesday. Playing at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field, the Golden Eagles fell to the Cardinals 2-1. Junior Chris O'Gorman (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) provided the lone goal for Brockport.

St. John Fisher (2-1-0) opened up the scoring in the 13th minute with a goal on a penalty kick. The Golden Eagles (1-2-0) were whistled for a handball in the box to set up the Cardinals' first goal.

Brockport wasted little time responding to Fisher's goal as O'Gorman provided the equalizer less than three minutes later. Sophomore Michael Bernard (Rochester, NY/Greece Odyssey) dribbled to the far end-line and played the ball back to O'Gorman for the one-timer from the top of the box, his first goal of the season.

Both teams battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the first half. Junior Bobby Ross (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had a good chance with a diving header on a cross that went just wide in the 33rd minute. St. John Fisher was credited with eight corner kicks in the first half, but the Brockport defense was able to keep the Cardinals from converting.

The two teams played an evenly matched game throughout the second half, with the Cardinals having a slight advantage in shots in the half, 7-4. Sophomore Ben Wilt (Pittsburgh, PA/Hampton) provided a spectacular save in the 66th minute. A St. John Fisher attacker had a one-on-one with Wilt, but the keeper made a deflecting save to keep the game tied at one.

Brockport went into overtime but failed to register a shot in the two 10-minute extra sessions. The Cardinals scored the game-winner with just over three minutes to play in the game.

Head coach Gary LaPietra understands what his team needs to do to get back on track. “We've got a lot of new faces” said LaPietra. “We've made some unfortunate mistakes but we need to get back into a rhythm again. We're facing good competition and they'll make us pay for our mistakes.”

Wilt finished the game with three saves while Brockport finished with 15 shots, five on net.

Brockport returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 8 with a nonconference matchup at Hobart, set to begin at 2:00 pm.
