The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team dropped a high-scoring affair against Fredonia State on Saturday night, falling 103-98 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) poured in 31 points, his second straight 30-point performance.
In a game that saw 60 personal fouls and 92 free throw attempts, Brockport and Fredonia went down to the wire. The Golden Eagles held a 91-88 lead with under four minutes to play, but after a personal foul and technical foul were assessed, Fredonia knocked down four straight free throws to go up one. The Blue Devils held onto the lead for the remainder of the game, hitting a total of 13 free throws in the final minutes.
Brockport falls to 10-8 in league play but secured the No. 5 seed in the conference playoffs with a win on Friday night. Geneseo defeated Buffalo State on Saturday night to jump into the No. 3 seed while Oswego's loss drops them to the No. 4 seed.
Brockport will travel to Oswego to take on the Lakers Tuesday at 8:00 pm. Oswego swept the regular season series against the Golden Eagles.
Neither side held a wide advantage throughout the early stages of the game Saturday night. Brockport held the lead for the majority of the first half, and led by as many as nine with five minutes to play. Ivy scored 17 points in the first half, including 7-8 from the free throw line.
Dorian Hayden (East Northport, NY/Northport) made an impact off the bench in the first 20 minutes, scoring nine points before halftime. The Golden Eagles went into the locker room leading 49-48.
Fredonia State opened the second half taking the lead. Ivy put Brockport back on top with a layup at the 13:26 mark, giving Brockport a 62-61 advantage. Moments later
Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) sank a three and followed it up with a layup to pace Brockport. The Golden Eagles held a lead for over six minutes, but the Blue Devils knocked down a three-point shot to regain the lead.
Bell hit a layup to tie the game at 95, the game's 12th tie of the night. The Blue Devils hit 9-12 free throws in the closing minutes to steal the conference win.
Bell and Hayden each scored 13 points on the night while
Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) scored 11 points and added five assists.
Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) chipped in 10.
Brockport shot 29-43 (67.4 percent) from the charity stripe while the Blue Devils made their presence felt at the line, going 41-49 (83.7 percent).
The game was the final regular season game for two Brockport seniors- Klein and
Jordan Major (Rochester, NY/Charlotte).
