Riley Austin's (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) goal late in the third period proved to be the game winner as The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team defeated Elmira 7-6 to earn its first victory of the year on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles improve to 1-4 on the season.
Brockport scored five goals in the first period to build an early 5-2 lead over the Soaring Eagles. Elmira brought the game to within one early in the third period, but Austin found the back of the net at the 4:51 mark of the third period to seal the victory. The Golden Eagle defense allowed just one goal over the final 29:10.
Cory Banwaree (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) stopped nine shots on the night to earn the victory. The senior stopped four shots in the final period to help lead the Golden Eagles to the win.
Justin Cook (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) provided the scoring early for the Golden Eagles, scoring the first two goals of the game within the first two minutes. Cook netted his first goal at the 14:04 mark on an assist from
Jesse Elliott (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and scored less than a minute later to put Brockport up 2-0. Austin gave Brockport a 3-0 advantage at the 12:18 mark with his fifth score of the year as the Golden Eagle offense exploded in the opening period.
After two Elmira goals,
Tim Cook (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Elliott (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) helped regain the three-goal lead for Brockport with a pair of goals in the final six minutes of the first period. Elliott now has a team-high nine goals on the year. The Soaring Eagles cut into the Brockport lead in the second period, scoring a goal at the 12:21 mark.
The teams remained scoreless until Elmira brought it to one with under three to play in the half.
Sean McCaffrey (Manlius, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) picked up his first goal as a member of the Golden Eagles, finding the back of the net with just 34 seconds left on the first half clock to give Brockport a 6-4 advantage heading into the locker room. Elliott was credited with his second assist of the day.
The second half proved to be a defensive battle between both sides. Elmira scored just 50 seconds into the third stanza to cut Brockport's lead to one. Neither side managed to score until Austin's tally with under five to play. Brockport managed to keep the Soaring Eagles scoreless until the 2:06 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Golden Eagles outlasted Elmira and earned the win.
Brockport fired off a season-high 24 shots on goal, including 13 in the first period. The Golden Eagles controlled nearly every facet of the game, including ground balls where Brockport held a 34-15 advantage. The Golden Eagles won 14 of the game's 17 faceoffs and caused a game-high 11 turnovers.
Brockport has now won the last three games against Elmira.
