Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) pitched The College at Brockport Softball team to victory with a 10-0 shutout against UMass Dartmouth on Friday morning, allowing just one hit on the day. The Golden Eagles fell to Worcester State in a close 1-0 contest in the second game of the day's doubleheader. Brockport finished its spring training trip in Cape Coral, FL with a 4-7 record.
Berger cruised in the circle as the Golden Eagle offense continued to find its groove for the second straight game. Brockport plated two runs in the first inning and exploded for eight runs in the third as the Golden Eagles shutout the Corsairs in a mercy rule-shortened game.
Korey Kibling (Lafayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) found herself in a pitcher's duel in game two as the freshman held her own in the circle. The freshman scattered five hits in seven innings of work, allowing just one run on the day. The lone run proved to be enough for the win as the Golden Eagles stranded nine runners in the game.
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) went a perfect 3-3 from the plate in game one while
Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) connected on her third home run in as many days for the Golden Eagles.
Amanda Yuhas (Hamburg, NY/Eden) picked up two hits to pace the Brockport offense in game two.
Lazzaro's home run came early as the sophomore blasted a pitch to left center to score Yates and put Brockport up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. After Berger got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the third without allowing a run, the Golden Eagle offense came alive.
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) stole second base and on the next pitch crossed the plate on a double-steal with Yates.
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) singled down the right field line to score Yates on the next at-bat.
Following an
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) walk, the next six Golden Eagles reached base, including a run-scoring double from
Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Ferchen came to bat again in the inning, singling to score
Ciara Condello (Rochester, NY/East Rochester). Ferchen scored Brockport's 10th run of the game to finish off the scoring.
Berger finished the game with four strikeouts to pick up the win. The freshman allowed a bunt single and two walks in five innings of work.
Kibling provided a stellar performance on the mound for the Golden Eagles as neither side found an offensive rhythm in game two. The Lancers scored the game's only run in the top of the third inning. Brockport threatened in the bottom half of the inning but left two runners in scoring position. Brockport stranded two runners in each of the next two innings as the Golden Eagles failed to find the equalizer.
Seven different Golden Eagles recorded hits in the game including Lazzarro and Ferchen who each extended their hitting streaks to five games.
The Golden Eagles head back north and will take on Potsdam in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play against Potsdam on March 29, weather pending.
