The College at Brockport softball team opened up its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule with a sweep of Potsdam on Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles defeated the Bears by scores of 9-0 and 5-1. Freshman pitchers
Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) and
Korey Kibling (Lafayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) each picked up complete game victories for Brockport.
Playing at Geneseo, the offense got started early for the Golden Eagles in game one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brockport tacked on two runs in the third and four in the fifth to drop Potsdam in a mercy-rule shortened game. Brockport pounded out 10 hits in the game, including three from
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool).
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) tripled to left center field and scored the game's first run on the next at bat as
Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) singled to left field. Dumas and
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) both scored on a fielding error with two outs to build the 3-0 lead.
Dumas drove a double to the left field wall to score
Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) in the bottom of the third inning.
Paige Monachino (East Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) pinch ran for Dumas and later scored on a wild pitch.
Brockport's biggest inning of the game came in the fourth as
Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) singled up the middle to score Dumas.
Amanda Yuhas (Hamburg, NY/Eden) picked up her second RBI of the day, scoring Rosenbarker. Pinch runner
Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) later scored on a two-out single from
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) while
Melissa Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) scored the game's final run on a double steal.
Berger picked up her second straight shutout as the freshman scattered three hits while striking out five batters.
Brockport needed just one inning of scoring to get by the Bears in game two. After a slow start offensively, the Golden Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) drove in two runs on a single to left field to lift the Golden Eagles.
The Brockport bats cooled off after Potsdam took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Golden Eagles left three runners on base through the first three innings but
Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) provided a big hit for the offense, singling up the middle to score Martin and tie the game at one in the fourth. Rana's single gave Brockport a 3-1 lead while Ferchen extended the score with a double to left field, scoring Arnold. Yates drove in Ferchen with a two-out RBI single for an extra insurance run.
After allowing a run-scoring double in the first inning, Kibling settled down in the circle. The freshman held Potsdam to just four base runners after the first frame to pick up her third victory of the year.
Between the two freshman pitchers this year, Berger and Kibling have combined for a 2.21 earned run average, including just four earned runs over their last four combined starts.
Brockport resumes play with a doubleheader against Plattsburgh tomorrow afternoon at Geneseo. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
