Second Period Downs Brockport at No. 7 RIT

Five goals in the second period dropped The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team against the No. 7 RIT Tigers on Wednesday as the Golden Eagles fell 9-4 in Rochester, NY. Justin Cook (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) netted his first two goals of the season to pace Brockport.

Both teams traded goals in the opening period as the Golden Eagles hung with the nationally ranked Tigers. Brockport recorded eight shots in the period to RIT's nine. The Tigers scored three goals in the final four minutes of the second period, including a goal with four seconds left in the half to pull away. Brockport scored the lone goal in the third period and the opening goal in the fourth, but the Tigers finished the game on a 3-0 run to prevent the upset.

The two teams played a fairly even game, statistically. RIT put 20 shots on net compared to the Golden Eagles' 16. Brockport held a 6-0 shot advantage in the third period alone. Both teams forced 17 turnovers on the day while Brockport picked up 20 ground balls to RIT's 26.

Cory Banwaree (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) played all 60 minutes in net, stopping 11 shots, the third-most of his career. Banwaree stopped four shots in both the first and fourth periods and three in the second.

RIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 10:12 mark of the first period and held the advantage until Riley Austin (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) scored on an unassisted goal with 38 seconds left on the clock to even the score at one. RIT scored two quick goals to open the second period, but Cook cut the deficit to one with his first score of the season. Tim Cook (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was credited with the assist. The one-goal deficit lasted shortly as RIT responded 36 seconds later to go up 4-2. The Tigers scored seven seconds later and buried a shot in the closing seconds of the half to take a 6-2 lead into locker room.

Alex Austin (Rochester, NY/Trinity-Pawling) scored an unassisted goal at the 13:05 mark of the third and the Golden Eagles held their own for the remainder of the period, shutting out the Tigers. Justin Cook picked up his second tally of the game 3:29 into the fourth period on an assist from Jesse Elliott (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) to bring Brockport within two. RIT scored three minutes later and found the back of the net twice in the final 2:09 to seal the win.

Brockport will travel to Clarkson on March 9 at 2:00 pm.
