The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse team opened up the 2013 season with a 14-10 victory on the road against the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Wednesday night. Sophomore
Liz Algie (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) scored four goals in her first career game as a Golden Eagle.
Brockport used a big first half to jump on the Golden Flyers early. Nazareth scored the game's first goal but Brockport answered right back with two of their own. Brockport led 4-3 midway through the first half but
Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) sparked a 4-0 run for the Golden Eagles to pull away. The two sides traded goals multiple times to open the second half, but Brockport held Nazareth scoreless for the final 15:34 of the game to secure the season-opening victory.
Following the first Nazareth goal,
Nina Tassone (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) found the back of the net at the 27:54 mark on an assist from Brown to tie the game up at one.
Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) gave Brockport its first lead less than a minute later until Nazareth responded with a goal of its own.
Brockport built a two-goal lead minutes later as Algie picked up her first score and Brown found
Ciara McKeon (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) for her first goal as a Golden Eagle. Nazareth cut the deficit in half, but Brown scored the first of four straight to boost the Brockport offense. Following the goal by Brown, Algie tallied her second score and
Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) picked up her first.
Makensie Schuber (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) put Brockport up 8-3 with an assist from Brown, her third of the game. Scordo provided the final goal of the half as Brockport went into the locker room leading 9-5.
Just as she had in the first half, Tassone scored the first goal of the second half for Brockport. Both sides traded the next seven goals of the game as McKeon picked up her second,
Katie Sullivan (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) recorded her first and Algie tacked on her third. Nazareth scored two goals less than a minute apart midway through the half to cut Brockport's lead to 13-10, but the Brockport defense clamped down on the Golden Flyers, holding them scoreless the remainder of the game. Algie provided Brockport's final goal on an assist from Tassone with just over four minutes remaining.
Hannah O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) and
Remle Harr (Farmington, NY/Fairport) split time in net for the Golden Eagles. O'Connor got the start while Harr entered after halftime. Both keepers made two saves on the night.
The Golden Eagles led nearly every statistical category on the night as Brockport outshot the Golden Flyers 29-19, including a 24-14 advantage on shots on goal. Brockport controlled the tempo of the first half, keeping the ball in its offensive zone a majority of the time. The Golden Eagles scored five free-position goals on the night, four coming in the first half.
Brockport held a 21-18 advantage in ground balls and dominated the faceoff, holding an 18-8 advantage in draw controls.
