Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/Watertown) scored two goals to help The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse team build a five-goal advantage and held on for a 9-8 victory over St. Lawrence University Friday afternoon at North Country Field in Canton.
St. Lawrence (0-1) opened the scoring but not until 18 minutes had gone by in the opening half. Brockport (2-0) answered with three straight goals as Maguire started the streak with a man-down goal at the 9:24 mark in the half. Scordo added a free-position goal six minutes later to give Brockport a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Ciara McKeon (Westhampton, NY/Westhampton Beach) scored off a centering pass from Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) for the 3-1 Brockport advantage.
The Saints scored with 1:39 to play to cut the lead to 3-2 and the score remained for the rest of the first half as Brockport took the 0ne-goal lead into the halftime intermission.
In the second half, St. Lawrence tied the score at 3-3 nearly five minutes into the period before Brockport took control of the momentum with six of the next seven goals for a 9-4 lead with less than 15 minutes to play in the second half as six different Golden Eagles scored goals. Erin Featherstone (Tully, NY/Tully) started the streak as Scordo added her second of the game and Nina Tassone (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) added a goal with an assist to Brown, her third of the game.
Liz Algie (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season followed by Makensie Schuber (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Hailey Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran).
St. Lawrence came back with four straight goals to trim the lead to 9-8 with 3:36 left to play. Brockport won the ensuing draw and controlled the ball for the remainder of the game as the Golden Eagles moved the ball around the offense end of the field to prevent the Saints from having a chance to tie the score.
Sophomore Remle Harr (Farmington, NY/Fairport) had a solid first half with four saves and finished with six in the game.
