Cory Banwaree (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) stopped a season-high 15 shots but The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team suffered a 9-5 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss to the Plattsburgh Cardinals at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles drop to 1-3 in conference play and 4-8 overall.
The Cardinals built a 3-1 lead after one quarter of play, but the Golden Eagles rallied back in the second, scoring two goals in the opening minutes to tie the game at three. Plattsburgh responded with two goals to close out the first half and extended their lead to three to open the third quarter.
Clifton Jackson (Snyder, NY/Amherst) picked up his first goal of the season late in the third, but the Cardinals managed to score three of the game's final four goals to take the win.
Banwaree faced 24 shots on net and 44 shots overall. The senior keeper has stopped 28 shots in his last two games after facing a total of 55 shots on net. Banwaree stopped six shots in the first quarter and five in the second to help keep Brockport in the game.
Trailing 1-0 to start the game,
Steve Brissette (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) recorded his seventh goal of the year with 6:41 remaining in the first quarter. Plattsburgh took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter after scoring a goal with just over a minute left in the first.
Jesse Elliott (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored his team-leading 31st goal of the year just 1:21 into the second and freshman
John Countryman (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) scored on an assist from
Bryon Palmer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) 1:02 later to even the game.
The Golden Eagles scoring stalled from there, not scoring again until Jackson's goal at the 4:36 mark of the third period. Palmer scored his third goal of the year with 4:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals held on to their lead for the victory.
The Cardinals held a 12-6 advantage on faceoffs and forced 25 Brockport turnovers on the day. The Golden Eagles limited Plattsburgh to just one goal on four extra man opportunities but failed to score on their three chances.
