Box Score
Senior Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) had a goal and two assists to break the school record for assists in a season as The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse team ended the regular season with a 13-8 victory over Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game Tuesday in Brockport.
The win for Brockport (11-5 Overall, 5-3 SUNYAC) clinched at least a fifth-place finish in the final SUNYAC standings qualifying the team for the five-team SUNYAC Tournament. Brockport could finish as high as third in the standings depending on the results of the Geneseo-New Paltz game and the Oswego-Oneonta game Saturday.
Fredonia (14-1, 7-1) lost for the first time as the Blue Devils had climbed to the No. 14 position in the National rankings released earlier Tuesday.
Brockport jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with goals by Katie Sullivan (Baldwinsville, CW Baker), Ciara McKeon (Westhampton, NY/Westhampton Beach), Emily Zartman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) and Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson). The early run was also fueled by an aggressive defense that caused four turnovers in the defensive end of the field in the first 10 minutes of action.
Brown assisted on the first two goals of the game giving her 50 assists on the season and breaking the record for assists in a season set by Angela Inzinna in 2006.
Fredonia answered with a pair of goals in a span of just over two minutes to cut the lead in half but Zartman added two more goals before the end of the first half to give the Golden Eagles a 6-2 lead.
In the second half, Fredonia scored three of the first four goals to trim the Brockport lead to 7-5. Brown sparked a Brockport run taking the ball from behind the cage and moving into open space in front scoring her 20th goal of the season. The Golden Eagles added four of the next five goals pushing the lead to 12-6. The run was capped by senior Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) at the 6:56 mark of the half.
Fredonia added a pair of goals but Brockport won the draw control following the second Blue Devil goal and controlled the play for the final 3:30 of the game. Zartman added her sixth goal of the game with 1:19 remaining for the final score. The six goals was a career best effort for Zartman giving her a team-leading 39 goals on the season.
