The College at Brockport softball team swept SUNY Cortland on Friday afternoon to clinch its first regular season State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title since 1997. The Golden Eagles, led by a trio of home runs, defeated the Red Dragons 5-4 in game one and completed the sweep with a 10-7 game two victory.
Brockport improved to 14-2 in league play this year to clinch the regular season championship. The last time the Golden Eagles won a regular season title, 1997, was also the last time Brockport won the SUNYAC Championship. The Golden Eagles have now swept its last three SUNYAC opponents.
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) powered the Golden Eagles in game one with a three-run home run to give Brockport a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning. Starting pitcher
Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) sat the Red Dragons down in order in the seventh to give Brockport its first victory over Cortland in its last 10 tries. Berger struck out six batters in her fourth straight complete game, upping her overall record to 9-4 on the year.

Jenna Yates (West Seneca NY/West Seneca East) smashed a first inning home run to start game two. Cortland took a 3-1 lead in the second inning but sophomore
Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning to put Brockport on top. Dumas added a pair of RBI singles later in the game as the Golden Eagles grabbed the regular season title.
Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) went the distance for Brockport, also picking up her ninth win of the year.
The Golden Eagles close out their regular season conference schedule with a pair of games against Oswego (15-15, 8-8) as a part of senior day on Saturday. Three seniors, Yates,
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and
Kayla Ladd (Fonda, NY/Fondaville) will be honored prior to the start of the game. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm at the Clark V. Whited Complex.
Brockport jumped on Cortland right away in game one as Yates led off the game with a single up the middle. Dumas later singled and
Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) doubled to center field to drive in both runners and put Brockport up 2-0.
The Red Dragons scored the next four runs and held a 4-2 lead heading into the sixth inning. Emily Kolena (Oswego, NY/Oswego) led off the frame with a pinch-hit single to right followed by an infield single from Rana. With two outs and a 2-2 count, Dumas delivered her fourth home run of the year just under the scoreboard in left field to regain the lead for Brockport. Berger induced two ground ball outs and an infield popup to end the game.
Game two saw Cortland strike first with a two run home run in the first inning. Yates connected on her eighth career home run in the second to cut the deficit in half. Cortland regained the lead with two runs in the second, but the Golden Eagle offense exploded from there. Lazzaro's home run to center put Brockport ahead 4-3.
Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) scored in the third to extend the lead and the Golden Eagles tacked on three more in the fifth with RBI singles from Dumas and Johnson and a sacrifice fly from
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia).
Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and two batters later Dumas singled to drive in Yates for Brockport's final run.
Dumas finished the day with five hits, five RBI and two runs scored while Yates picked up three hits and three runs scored. Johnson extended her hitting streak to seven games and Arnold upped her team-leading batting average to .362 with a pair of hits on the day.
With the regular season title, Brockport will host the SUNYAC playoffs May 2-4 at the Clark V. Whited Complex.
