Brockport Earns No. 3 Seed with Win over Oneonta

Sophomore Clifton Jackson (Snyder, NY/Amherst) scored with just less than six minutes left in the fourth quarter to break a 9-9 tie and The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team went on to an 11-9 victory over Oneonta Saturday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport. The victory in the final regular-season game locked up the No. 3 seed for the Golden Eagles in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament.

Brockport (6-8 Overall, 3-3 SUNYAC) will face No. 2 seed Plattsburgh in a SUNYAC Tournament semifinal game at Plattsburgh Wednesday afternoon.

Against Oneonta (3-11, 1-5), the team traded goals early before the Red Dragons scored twice in the final minutes to lead 4-2 after the first 15 minutes of action. Oneonta added two more goals to start the second quarter for a 6-2 advantage.

Freshman John Countryman (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) scored at the 4:41 mark of the quarter to start a streak of three straight goals as Brockport trimmed the lead to 6-5 at the halftime intermission.

Riley Austin (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) scored his second goal of the game early in the third quarter to draw the teams even at 6-6. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the quarter as Tim Cook (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored with less than a minute left in the third to tie the game at 8-8 heading into the final quarter.

Just 1:07 into the fourth quarter, Jesse Elliott (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) fired a low shot past the Oneonta goalie for a 9-8 lead.

At the 10-minute mark, Oneonta tied the game up but four minutes later, Jackson started a run from the top of the offensive formation and fired a long shot into the upper corner of the cage for a 10-9 lead.

Brockport gained possession after the ensuing faceoff and controlled play until Steve Brissette (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) broke free taking a pass from Bryon Palmer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and scoring to give Brockport a two-goal advantage with less than two minutes left.

Brockport won another faceoff – the fourth of the quarter – and the Golden Eagles ran out the game for the victory.

Elliott led the way with two goals and three assists for five points and Riley Austin added three goals for the Golden Eagles. Cook, Alex Austin and Palmer had a goal and an assist each. Cory Banwaree (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) made 13 saves including nine in the first half for Brockport.
