Box Score

Senior Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) ended her regular season career at the Clark V. Whited Complex in dramatic fashion with a walk-off single to score Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving The College at Brockport softball team a 4-3 victory over Oswego in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles, taking on the Lakers as part of senior day, fell in game one by a score of 9-4.

After dropping game one, Brockport held an early 3-0 lead in game two. The Lakers rallied to tie the game at three, including two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Lazzaro reached base on a 3-2 walk followed by a Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) single through the left side and both runners advanced on a wild pitch, setting the stage for Yates. The senior delivered a line drive hit to right center field with two strikes to help Brockport improve to 15-3 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

The Golden Eagles had already clinched the regular season SUNYAC Championship and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament with a sweep over Cortland on Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles, the host of the tournament, will play Oswego in the first round at 9:00 am on Thursday after the Lakers earned the No. 6 seed. The 15 conference wins are the most for the Golden Eagles since the 2009 season.

The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start in game two as Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) continued her solid stretch of hitting with an RBI single to score Yates. Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) delivered a sacrifice fly to score senior Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and put Brockport up 2-0. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to three with a Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) home run in the third.

Oswego chipped away with a run in the sixth and tacked on two more in the seventh before Yates provided the dramatics in the bottom of the seventh. Yates finished the game with two hits. Freshman pitcher Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) kept Oswego hitless and struck out five batters in the first two innings before leaving with an injury. Fellow freshman Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) kept the no-hitter in tact until the sixth inning. Kolenda picked up the win, her second of the season, while striking out five batters.

The runs were hard to come by early on in game one for Brockport as the Golden Eagles failed to score through the first five frames. Oswego had built a 5-0 lead until the bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth for Brockport. Yates led off the inning with a hard hit single up the middle followed by a pinch-hit knock from Kolenda, her second in as many days. Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) loaded the bases with Brockport's third straight single to start the inning. Rosenbarker then came to bat and delivered a double to left field to score two.

Brockport failed to advance the runners on the next two batters but senior Kayla Ladd (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) was hit by a pitch that scored pinch-runner Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee). Rana used her speed on the next at-bat for an infield single to score Rosenbarker and bring Brockport within one.

Oswego killed any chance of Brockport tying the game up with a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning as the Golden Eagles dropped game one, ending its streak of six straight conference wins.

Yates finished the day 4-8 at the plate while Rosenbarker drove in three runs.

The rest of the SUNYAC tournament consists of Cortland with the No. 2 seed followed by Plattsburgh, Geneseo and New Paltz with the No. 5 seed.
