Sophomore
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) was 3-for-3 in the opener and 4-5 in the nightcap leading The College at Brockport Softball team to a doubleheader split with Geneseo Saturday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader in Geneseo.
Brockport (9-8 Overall, 5-1 SUNYAC) dropped the opener 6-0 but rebounded to beat Geneseo (8-12, 3-3) 6-2 in the second game of the day.
In the opener, Brockport was limited to six hits, with Ferchen responsible for three, while Geneseo scored twice in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the shutout victory.
In game two, Geneseo scored in the bottom of the first for the early 1-0 lead but Brockport answered in the top of the second inning with the tying run. Freshman
Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drew a one out walk and moved to second with an
Amanda Yuhas (Hamburg, NY/Eden) single. Two batters later,
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) lifted a single to left field scoring Harris to tie the game at 1-1.
In the fourth inning, Brockport took a 2-1 lead as Erica Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) scored from third with the bases loaded on an illegal pitch call.
In the sixth, Ferchen gave Brockport a 4-1 lead with a two-run double to right centerfield scoring both Rana and Lazzaro. Lazzaro had walked to start the inning and Rana reached base on an infield error after a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Geneseo responded in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff home run to cut the Brockport lead to 4-2 but the Golden Eagles added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning for the final margin of victory. In the seventh,
Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) singled to start the inning and Harris followed with a single down the left field line. Yuhas reached on a fielder's choice with the lead runner thrown out at third and after both runners moved up a base with stolen bases, Rana reached on a fielder's choice play and error on the shortstop pushing the fifth run of the game across the plate for Brockport.
Ferchen followed with an infield single – her fourth hit of the game – to push home another run.
Korey Kibling (Lafayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) was the winning pitcher in the second game with a complete game five-hitter and three strike outs.
