Senior Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) had four hits and classmate Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored three times leading The College at Brockport to a doubleheader sweep over RIT Tuesday afternoon in the home opener for the Golden Eagles at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport.
Brockport (11-8) won the first game 8-1 with three runs in both the second and third innings and then Rana scored on a Yates single in the sixth inning of the nightcap to lead Brockport to a 3-2 win to complete the sweep.
In game one, Yates was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run batted in while Rana was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Rana sparked the second inning rally when she reached base on an outfield error with two outs as two runs scored on the play and later scored on a double steal to give Brockport a 4-1 lead. In the third inning, Yates singled to start another three-run rally and later scored on a sacrifice fly. Brockport led 7-1 after three innings and freshman pitcher Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) picked up her first career victory allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
In game two, Brockport took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the third and fifth innings but RIT (5-13) rallied in the top of the sixth to tie the score on a two-run home run by Kelsey McManus. In the bottom half of the inning, Yates singled to right field after Rana had drawn a walk but an error by the RIT right fielder allowed Rana to come all the way around to score the go-ahead and eventual winning run for Brockport.
The Golden Eagles managed just three hits in the game but Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) connected on a solo home run in the third inning for one of the hits and Ciara Condello (Rochester, NY/East Rochester) had a run-scoring single in the fifth as well. The Golden Eagles also drew 10 walks in the contest.
Erin Fleming (Friendship, NY/Bolivar-Richburg) stated for Brockport and went 5 1/3 inning allowing two runs on six hits before freshman Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) recorded her team-leading fourth victory throwing the final 1 2/3 innings allowing one hit and striking out three RIT batters.
