Jenna Yates (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) delivered a go-ahead three-run double against New Paltz in the sixth inning to save The College at Brockport softball team from elimination in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament on Thursday. The Golden Eagles defeated the Hawks 6-4 after falling to Oswego in the first game of the tournament.
Brockport, hosting the SUNYAC Tournament for the first time since 1997, trailed 4-2 entering the sixth inning against New Paltz.
Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich), in her first plate appearance of the year, doubled to start things off for Brockport. After the Golden Eagles loaded the bases, Yates drove a pitch to right center to clear the bases and give Brockport a 6-4 lead. Berger closed out the game with a perfect seventh inning in the circle.
The Golden Eagles were sent to the elimination game after dropping the first game of the double-elimination tournament to Oswego 9-0. Brockport will play at 1:00 pm tomorrow against either Geneseo, Cortland or Plattsburgh, depending on outcomes during tomorrow morning games.
Against the Hawks, both teams scored a run in the first inning to open the game.
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) singled up the middle to score
Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), tying the game in the bottom of the first.
Rosenbarker doubled in the third inning with
Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) on first base. On the next at bat, Dumas scored on a wild pitch to give Brockport a 2-1 lead.
Brockport held the lead until New Paltz erupted for three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead but the Golden Eagles responded in the bottom of the frame. Berger entered the batting lineup after relieving
Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) in the circle. Berger drove a pitch to right center with one out to get on base.
Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) singled and
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) walked to load the bases. Yates then delivered her second clutch hit in as many weeks to keep the Golden Eagles alive and send them to day two of the tournament.
Dumas and Rosenbarker each collected two hits on the day. Berger did not allow a base runner in 1.1 innings of work while the freshman struck out two batters to pick up the win.
