Caitlyn Rana (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) did everything she could to keep The College at Brockport softball team alive in the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament, but The College at Brockport softball team was eliminated with a 5-4 loss to Geneseo on Friday afternoon at the Clark V. Whited Complex.
Rana collected a season and team-high three hits on the day and scored one run to lead the Golden Eagle offense. Brockport held a 2-0 lead through the first five innings of play but the Blue Knights put up four runs in the sixth, including a three-run home run to take the lead.
Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) scored in the bottom half of the inning but Geneseo answered with a run in the top of the seventh to build a 5-3 lead.
Rana reached base in the bottom of the seventh on a bloop single to shallow center field.
Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) delivered a single to right center with two strikes, advancing Rana to third. On the next at bat, Rana scored on a single from
Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) to cut Geneseo's lead in half. With two outs,
Julie Arnold (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) connected on a hard-hit line drive to third base but the ball was knocked down and Arnold was narrowly thrown out at first base to end the game.
The Golden Eagles collected 12 hits on the day, including two from Johnson and two doubles from
Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), making just her sixth start of the year. Rivers sparked the Brockport offense in the second inning, bringing in two runs on a double down the left field line as
Kayla Ladd (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) and
Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) came around to score.
Berger pitched all seven innings in the loss for the Golden Eagles, scattering seven hits and struck out three Blue Knights.
Ferchen recorded two stolen bases on the day, giving her 20 on the season to set a new school record for the Golden Eagles while Rana extended her career record of games played to 161.
Geneseo advances to day three of the SUNYAC Tournament on Saturday.
