Junior tailback Tyrone Nichols (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) ran for 59 yards and three touchdowns in the first half of action to help The College at Brockport build a convincing 28-0 lead at halftime but Alfred spoiled Homecoming for the Golden Eagles coming back to score 28 points of its own in the second half and winning a 34-28 decision with a touchdown in overtime Saturday night in the first-ever home night game in Brockport history.
Alfred (2-1) had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation time with a 22-yard field goal but the kick sailed wide left forcing the overtime. Brockport (1-2) had the first possession in the extra session but had three incomplete passes and failed to score. The Saxons scored on the second play of its possession with a 21-yard TD pass to end the game.
Brockport opened the scoring in the first quarter after senior Darryl Thompson (Rochester, NY/Marshall) returned a punt 40 yards giving the Golden Eagles great field position to start its first drive. Nichols had three carries in the drive including a 10-yard run to cap the scoring drive and give Brockport an early lead.
Alfred responded with a drive that stalled at the Brockport 21 yard line but a 37-yard field goal attempt came up short giving the ball back to the Golden Eagles.
Quarterback Ty Stoldt (Alden, NY/Alden) engineered a drive that included a 42-yard completion to Thompson moving the ball into the red zone and Nichols capped the drive off with an 11-yard scoring run and a Brockport 14-0 lead.
Alfred threatened again with its next drive moving all the way to the Brockport 13-yard line but a pass into the endzone was intercepted by Ross Ragonesi (East Northport, NY/Northport) and the Golden Eagles started another scoring drive. After a Brockport holding penalty moved the ball into a 2nd and 20 situation, Stoldt connected with Nichols with a 28-yard pass play giving Brockport a first-and-goal situation as the first quarter came to an end. On 3rd-and-goal from the two yard line, Nichols bulled his way into the end zone for the third TD of the game and a 21-0 lead less than a minute into the second quarter.
Near the end of the quarter, Brockport put together a long drive that included a fumbled punt return recovered by Brockport and finally ended with a Stoldt 7-yard scoring pass to Jake Spalik (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and a 28-0 Brockport lead with 14 seconds left before halftime.
Alfred regrouped during the halftime intermission and came out with a new quarterback as Tyler Johnson took over the signal calling duties. After a short Brockport drive to open the half, Alfred put together a 13-play drive that ended on the Brockport 13-yard line with a fumble forced by Colby Morabito (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and recovered by Tarik Bennett (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mt. St. Michael).
After a three and out drive for Brockport, Johnson sparked the Alfred offense with a 74-yard scoring run on the first play of the ensuing drive to put the Saxons on the board with 5:18 left to play in the third quarter.
The Saxons made it 28-14 intercepting Stoldt on the very next drive and returning the ball 70 yards for a touchdown and Alfred cut the lead in half in just over one minute.
Alfred scored again early in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap but missed the extra point and Brockport held a 28-20 lead with 12:11 left to play.
After another three and out drive for Brockport, Alfred scored on a short drive that included a 58-yard pass completion on the first play of the drive. The Saxons went for two points on the conversion and a pass up the middle was complete tying the game at 28-28 with 9:54 to play.
Brockport responded well with a long drive but facing a fourth down on the Alfred 17-yard line, the Golden Eagles attempted a 33-yard field goal that missed to the left with 2:23 left on the clock.
Alfred took over and drove down the field with three completions to reserve tight end Isiah Young – the last one moving the ball to the Brockport six-yard line with less than 30 seconds left. Alfred let the clock run down to :01 before attempting a 22-yard field goal for the win but that kick was wide left as well which forced the overtime period.
Nichols led the Brockport running game with 86 yards and three TDs while Spalik had seven catches for 59 yards. Morabito led the defense with 11 tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
