Ivy Propels Brockport Past Plattsburgh

Box Score Senior John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) scored a season-high 32 points to help The College at Brockport men's basketball team earn an 85-78 come-from-behind victory at Plattsburgh in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Brockport (8-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) and Plattsburgh (8-3, 2-2 SUNYAC) traded the lead back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the game. Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) sunk two free throws at 17:11 and started the Golden Eagles on a 7-0 run to put them up 14-6.

A three-pointer from the Cardinals midway through the first period tied the game back up, 16-16.

Plattsburgh proceeded to go on a 9-2 run and take a seven point lead two minutes later.

The Golden Eagles continued to fight back and at 5:29, Mike Gallagher (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) tied the game up once more.

Plattsburgh managed to push back ahead by five points with 2:30 remaining in the half, but Ivy closed out the half with eight points to head to overtimes with things once again tied up.

Ivy opened up the second half with a fast break layup to put the Golden Eagles up 40-38. Plattsburgh turned answered with a three-pointer to regain the lead by one.

The game remained close, with Plattsburgh holding onto a lead for the majority of half. Plattsburgh pushed their lead out to eight points after draining a three with 11:18 to play.

With the Cardinals leading by eight points with just over six minutes left in the game, Brockport put together a key 10-2 run. Caruthers got things going for the Golden Eagles with a three pointer at 5:03. Ivy added seven consecutive points to bring the game to its final tie.

Plattsburgh went up by two with a layup, but Brockport quickly answered and with a tip in from Patrick Coyle (North Chili, NY/Bishop Kearney) regained a one point lead.

The Golden Eagles closed the final two minutes of the game with a 7-1 run to put away their eighth victory of the season.

Ivy led all scoring with 32 points and added eight rebounds and three steals. Caruthers also recorded double-digits, finishing the game with 21 points. Coyle chipped in nine points and had a team-high nine rebounds.

Brockport shot 41.9% (26-of-62) from the floor, 29.2% (7-of-24) from long range and 83.9% (16-31) from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday night at 8 pm for a SUNYAC matchup at home against Fredonia.
