Wrestling Top Div.3 School NY State Tournament

Six wrestlers earn place finishes led by second place finisher Asher Kramer

Asher Kramer took second at the New York State Championships Sunday for Brockport

Junior Asher Kramer (Sloatsburg, NY/Suffern) wrestled his way through the championship bracket and finished second for The College at Brockport Wrestling team in the 125-pound bracket at the New York State Championship Tournament Sunday afternoon at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

Brockport finished seventh as a team and was the top Division III team in the final standings with six Division I teams finishing ahead of the Golden Eagles. Host Cornell won the team title in a very close battle with Hofstra. The Big Red scored 144.5 points and Hofstra was second at 144 points. Army was third (128.5 pts) followed by University of Buffalo (121.5), Columbia (104.5), Binghamton (83) and Brockport (66.5). The Golden Eagles finished ahead of 16 other college teams in the State Championship Tournament that features teams from all three NCAA divisions and junior colleges as well as club teams from across the state.

Kramer won by technical fall with a 17-2 victory in his opening bout and posted a major decision 12-3 win in the second round. In the semifinal round, Kramer won a tie-breaker decision to advance to the championship bout where he lost a decision to top-seeded Max Sorio from University of Buffalo.

Cole Tristram (Newton Falls, NY/Clifton Fine) was a fourth place finisher in the 285-pound bracket, Rocco Rosso (Greece, NY/Greece Olympia) came back through the consolation bracket to finish fourth at 133 pounds, Jeff Palmeri (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was fifth at 184 pounds, Eric Velez (Medina, NY/Medina) was the sixth place finisher in the 133-pound bracket and Tyler Lusht (Binghamton, NY/Chenengo Forks) took seventh place in the 174-pound bracket for the Golden Eagles.

Lusht scored a pin in 1:53 of his first bout and won a pair of major decisions in the consolation bracket to finish seventh, Palmeri won two decisions in the championship half of the bracket before falling to the consolation bracket to finish fifth and Tristram won a pair of decisions and scored a pin in the consolation bracket to take fourth.
