Senior Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) finished the day with four RBI's and a run to lead The College at Brockport softball team to 5-3 victory over the University of New England and a 7-2 victory over Wooster on Saturday afternoon in Lee County, FL.
Against the University of New England, Brockport got on the score board first in the bottom of the third inning. Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) singled up the middle, scoring Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool).
The Golden Eagles turned around and played strong defense, forcing the University of New England to go three up, three down in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brockport took a 3-0 lead as Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) both scored off of a bomb to center field from Harris.
The University of New England took advantage of two errors from Brockport and scored three runs to tie the game up at three in the sixth inning.
However, Dumas came up big for the Golden Eagles the same inning, hitting a single up the left side to help Rivers and Jordan Bush (Redwood, NY/Alexandria) score and give Brockport back the lead.
To close out game one, the Golden Eagles held the University of New England to just one hit and sealed the win. Pitcher, Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) finished the game strong, striking out the final two batters.
In the circle, Kibling earned her first win of the season. She allowed eight hits, three runs and three walks. Kibling finished the game with seven strikeouts.
Against Wooster, the Golden Eagles found themselves down one in the top of the first inning after a Scots batter hit a solid triple to right field.
Ferchen got Brockport on the board in the second inning after scoring on a wild pitch. Erika Lazzaro (Oswego, NY/Oswego) followed up with a single through the right side, scoring Kelly Proper (Silver Spring, NY/Letchworth) and giving Brockport a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Rivers hit a textbook sacrifice bunt, allowing Lazzaro to get home.
Brockport added to its lead in the bottom of the third as Nikki Atkins ripped a shot out to left field, scoring Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell).
The Scots scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Golden Eagles answered back with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. Dumas hit a strong double out to left center field, helping Rivers and Amanda Yuhas (Hamburg, NY/Eden) score. Proper singled up the middle, scoring Dumas and giving the Brockport its final run of the game.
In the final three innings, the Golden Eagles defense stayed strong to hold the Scots to just two hits and zero runs.
In the circle, Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) earned her first win of the season. Berger pitched all seven innings, allowing just two runs, seven hits and two walks. She finished the game with eight strikeouts.
Brockport returns to action on Sunday in Cape Coral, FL with an 11 am game against Nichols and a 1 pm game against UMass-Dartmouth.
