Junior Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) tallied three stolen bases, making her The College at Brockport softball team's new record holder for career stolen bases on Tuesday afternoon during the fourth day of competition in Ft. Myers, FL. Brockport lost both games, falling 4-2 to Wisconsin Superior and 4-3 to Wisconsin Platteville.
Against Wisconsin Superior, the Golden Eagles were the first to get on the scoreboard. After two scoreless innings, Brockport took advantage of a quick Ferchen and an error from Wisconsin Superior.
Ferchen started off the inning, reaching first on a throwing error from the pitcher. She followed up with a stolen base on the next pitch. A sacrifice bunt from Gabrielle Rivers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) advanced Ferchen to third. Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) followed up with a walk and a stolen base of her own, giving Brockport two runners in scoring position. Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) stepped up and ripped a hit up the middle, scoring both Ferchen and Harris to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Wisconsin Superior answered back in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a Brockport error with bases loaded and tying the game, 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wisconsin Superior took over the lead after a runner scored off of a wild pitch.
The Golden Eagles struggled offensively in the final four innings, only recording one hit.
Wisconsin Superior added a run to their lead with another runner scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
In the circle, Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) recorded the loss. In six innings she allowed four runs on four hits, with seven walks and eight strikeouts.
In game two, Wisconsin Platteville took an early lead with one run in the bottom of the first inning. In the second inning, Wisconsin Platteville added another run to take a 2-0 lead.
Despite struggling to hit in the first three innings, Brockport brought things to a tie in the top of the fourth. After an early error by Wisconsin Platteville, Andrea Schell (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) hit a single to right field that scored Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) and Jacqueline Rio (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North).
Wisconsin Platteville answered right back, to regain a two run lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Ferchen tied and then broke the stolen bases record in the fifth inning, which was held by Grace Robbins who recorded 38 from 1994-97. After a single to left field, Ferchen stole second and then third. A single from Gabriella Baltzley (Lawton, PA/Elk Lake) scored Ferchen and put Brockport only one run down.
Despite good defense, the Golden Eagles could not get a hit in their last two at bats.
In the circle, Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) was credited with the loss. Kolenda pitched four innings, allowing four runs on five hits, with seven walks and one strikeout. Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) finished off the game, pitching two innings with no runs on zero hits, one walk and one strikeout.
Baltzley finished the day 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Rosenbarker was 2-for-6 with a run. Johnson and Schell each finished with two RBI's.
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow at 1:00 pm against Alfred State and 3:00 pm against Smith in Lee County, FL.
