John Countryman (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) scored two fourth quarter goals to spark a late run, but The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team could not overcome being shutout in the first half and fell at home to Adrian 9-5 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
Brockport (3-4) jumped on Adrian (4-1) with a high pressure defense in the opening minutes, but the Bulldogs managed to get on the scoreboard with the first goal of the game just over five minutes into play. Adrian added another goal on the man-up advantage at the five minute mark of the first quarter.
The Golden Eagles got plenty of shots off, but struggled to get them on target.
In the second quarter, Adrian took a three goal lead at 9:26. The Bulldogs continued to play a stifling zone defense on Brockport that shutout the Golden Eagles in the entire first half. 32 seconds before halftime, Adrian took advantage of Brockport penalty and scored their fourth goal.
The second half started out the same as the first, as Adrian continued to control the ball. Just 1:29 seconds into the third quarter, the Bulldogs took a 5-0 lead.
Justin Cook (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) was able to stop the Brockport scoring drought, notching the first goal for the Golden Eagles at 12:38.
Minutes later, Adrian added another goal to take back their five goal advantage. Casey Cleary (Cortland, NY/Homer) scored Brockport's second goal of the day at 7:24 in the third quarter. However, Adrian managed to slip another goal past the Golden Eagles with only 11 seconds left in the third quarter.
Brockport came out with a new energy in the fourth quarter, going on a 3-0 run to cut Adrian's lead to just two goals with 12:53 left in the game. Countryman got things started with a goal off of a great pass from Bryon Palmer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) just 11 seconds into play. He followed up with his second goal just over a minute later this time off of a crisp pass from Jake Giudice (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas). Steve Brissette (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) tallied the final goal of the run and of the game for the Golden Eagles on the man-up advantage at 12:53.
With three quick goals, Brockport looked strong heading into the final 10 minutes of play, but Adrian's defense found a way to bring back their stifling zone, not allowing the Golden Eagles to score again.
As time ran down, Adrian added two more goals at 2:36 and 2:02 to hold onto the win.
Despite the loss, Brockport did outshoot Adrian 32-27 and Keenan Sullivan was stellar on faceoffs, finishing the game 16-for-18.
Countryman led the Golden Eagles with two points on his two goals. Cleary, Cook and Brissette tallied one goal each, while Palmer, Giudice, Alex Austin (Rochester, NY/Trinity-Pawling) and Clifton Jackson (Snyder, NY/Amherst) tallied one assist each. Defensively, Sullivan led the Golden Eagles with eight ground balls.
In goal, Conor Nowak (Lakeview, NY/Eden) recorded the loss. Nowak played all 60:00, making six saves and picking up two ground balls.
Brockport returns to action on Saturday as the Golden Eagles open up conference play at Oneonta for an 11 am matchup.
