Brockport Falls in SUNYAC Opener

The Golden Eagles lost to Oneonta 11-9 in the first conference game of the season

Bryon Palmer (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) led The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team on offense with three points, but Oneonta made a fourth quarter comeback to take the 11-9 victory over the Golden Eagles in the first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game of the season on Saturday afternoon in Oneonta, NY.

Brockport (3-5, 0-1 SUNYAC) jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter. Brendan Fitzgerald (Baiting Hollow, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) got things going for the Golden Eagles with a goal off of a pass from Jake Giudice (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) just 3:26 seconds into play. Steve Brissette (Marcellus NY/Marcellus) followed up two minutes later with another goal off of a pass from Palmer. Riley Austin (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) had a great pass to Giudice, who capped of Brockport's 3-0 run with a goal at 9:01.

Oneonta (3-7,1-0 SUNYAC) managed to get on the scoreboard with five minutes left in the first quarter. Neither team managed to score again in the final minutes of the quarter.

The Red Dragons tied things up with two quick goals in the beginning of the second quarter. Justin Cook (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) answered back and gave the Golden Eagles the lead a goal off of an Alex Austin (Rochester, NY/Trinity-Pawling) pass at 8:05. With just three seconds remaining, Palmer notched his second point of the game and gave the Golden Eagles a 5-3 lead heading into halftime.

Both teams struggled to finish on their shots in the opening minutes of the second half. In the third quarter with eight minutes left, Casey Cleary (Cortland, NY/Homer) pushed the Brockport lead out to three. Minutes later, John Countryman (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) added another goal for the Golden Eagles for a 7-3 lead.

In the final quarter of the game, the Red Dragons were able to make a comeback and hold onto the win in the closing minutes. Oneonta scored a goal just 16 seconds into play, finding themselves down by just two.

Countryman added a second goal and pushed the Brockport lead back out with 13:26 on the scoreboard. However, in the middle of the quarter, Oneonta went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead and the eventual win.

A goal from Palmer with 3:42 left to play in the game put Brockport down by only one goal, but the Golden Eagles were not able to score again.

The Red Dragons added one more goal in the final 48 seconds to seal the win for Oneonta.

Palmer led the way on offense with two goals and one assist for three points. Brissette, Countryman and Giudice each tallied two points, while Cleary, Cook, A. Austin, R. Austin and Fitzgerald added one point each.

Conor Nowak (Lakeview, NY/Eden) recorded the loss in goal. In 60:00, Nowak recorded 17 saves and allowed 11 goals.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday for another conference road game this time at Oswego for a 4pm matchup.
