Box Score Junior Justin Cook (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) scored three times including twice in the fourth quarter as The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team cut a four-goal deficit to two goals but could not get closer in a 10-8 loss Saturday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.
Potsdam (8-3 Overall, 2-1 SUNYAC) took an early lead and held a 5-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Brockport (4-7, 1-3) scored the first two goals of the second quarter to trim the lead. Senior Riley Austin (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) and freshman Casey Cleary (Cortland, NY/Homer) scored in the first three minutes of the period to trim the lead to 5-3.
Potsdam scored three of the next four goals to regain the four-goal advantage with an 8-4 lead with six minutes to play in the first half.
Brockport took some momentum into the halftime intermission as John Countryman (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) scored at the 4:55 mark of the second quarter to make it an 8-5 game.
In the third quarter, each team scored a goal as Steve Brissette (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) scored with 49 seconds left in the quarter and the Golden Eagles trailed by three at 9-6 to start the fourth quarter.
Potsdam scored 57 seconds into the quarter to regain the four-goal advantage again before Cook scored his two goals in the quarter to help the Golden Eagles mount a comeback attempt. Cook scored at the 9:04 mark and again at the 4:28 mark with a man-up goal but Brockport could not get any closer as the game ended with a 10-8 Potsdam win.
Cook led the way with three goals and an assist for four points while Brissette added two goals and Riley Austin chipped in a goal and an assist. Countryman and Cleary scored the other two Brockport goals. Jake Giudice (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), Alex Austin (Rochester, NY/Trinity Pawling) and Keenan Sullivan (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Eastern) had one assist each. Sullivan also won 14 of the 21 face-offs in the contest.
Conor Nowak (Lakeview, NY/Eden) made eight saves and Potsdam's Ryan Duffy came up with 21 saves as Brockport dominated with 50 shots to 30 for Potsdam. The Golden Eagles held a 16-4 shots advantage in the fourth quarter alone.
