Junior Kelly Proper (Silver Spring, NY/Letchworth) finished 2-for-3 from the plate, but The College at Brockport softball team could not find the offense it needed to defeat Cortland as the Golden Eagles fell in both games on Saturday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader.

In game one, both teams struggled to produce hits. The Red Dragons managed to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless through all seven innings. The closest Brockport got to scoring was in the top of the second and the top of the seventh, but each time they left two runners on base.

Brockport nearly held Cortland scoreless as well, but in the bottom of the final inning, the Red Dragons bombed a three-run home run to left field to end the game with a 3-0 win.

Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was the top Golden Eagle hitter of the game. Harris finished 3-for-3 from the plate. The only other Brockport players to register hits were Nicole Atkins (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) with two and Gabriella Baltzley (Lawton, PA/Elk Lake) with one.

Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) recorded the less in the circle. In 6.2 innings, Berger allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Game two saw the Brockport bats come more alive than in the first game. Cortland struck first on the scoreboard. The Red Dragons took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a hard hit to left center scored two runs.

After not recording any hits in the first two innings, the Golden Eagles managed to chip one run away from the Red Dragons lead, scoring in the top of the third. Proper started out the inning with a solid double out to left field. Atkins stepped up and hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Proper to third. Cheyenne Bumpus (Munnsville, NY/Stockbridge Valley) followed up with a grounder to second, but allowed Proper to score the Golden Eagles first run of the day.

Strong defense in the bottom of the third and a run in the fourth inning helped the Golden Eagles tie things up at two. Brockport took advantage of a throwing error from Cortland on a hit from Susanna Johnson (Edmeston, NY/Edmeston) and Sarah Rosenbarker (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) tallied a run.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cortland used three big hits and a Brockport error to push its lead back out to two runs.

The Red Dragons added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, this time using four hits and another Brockport error to go up 6-2.

Brockport made a comeback in the sixth inning, but came up one run to short at the end of the game. In the middle of the inning, Proper ripped a single to right center field, scoring Rosenbarker. One the next pitch there was a passed ball that allowed Andrea Schell (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) to score. Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego) scored the last Brockport run of the game off of an RBI from Atkins.

Down by one, the Golden Eagles held Cortland in the bottom of the sixth, but could not come up with the tying run in the top of the seventh inning.

Proper led the way on offense in game two, finishing 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Rosenbarker went 2-for-4 with two runs. Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) finished 2-for-4 and Kolenda 1-for-1.

In the circle, Kolenda recorded the loss. In six innings, Kolenda allowed six runs on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Brockport returns to action on Sunday for the 2014 home opener with a SUNYAC doubleheader against Oswego starting at 1 pm.
