Box Score 2 Junior Andrea Schell (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) hit two home runs as The College at Brockport softball team spilt a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against Oneonta in the first home game of the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles fell 2-0 in the first game and then recorded a 5-3 win in the second game.
Both teams struggled to get their offenses going in game one, each only tallying five hits. The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth. The Red Dragons took advantage of three big hits to take a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Eagles had bases loaded, but could not find the answer they needed to win the game.
Korey Kibling (LaFayette, NY/Bishop Ludden) recorded the loss in the circle. Kibling pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks and a season-high eight strikeouts.
In game two, Brockport came out early with offensive power. Brianna Ferchen (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) started things out for the Golden Eagles making it to second off of a single and a throwing error from the Red Dragons. Brianna Harris (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was walked and Emily Dumas (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ferchen was unable to score after a bunt from Emily Kolenda (Oswego, NY/Oswego), but the bases remained loaded for Brockport. Schell stepped up and nailed an off speed pitch out to left center field for a grand slam.
Oneonta cut the Golden Eagles lead to two in the top of the third inning. The Red Dragons scored two runs on five big hits.
In the top of the fifth Oneonta was able to cut the Brockport lead to just one run after a sacrifice fly to left field.
However, Schell bombed a second home run, this time out to center field to put the Golden Eagles back up by two runs.
The Brockport defense held Oneonta scoreless in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
Jaime Berger (Norwich, NY/Norwich) earned the win in the circle. Berger pitched all seven inning, allowing three runs on nine hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
Schell led the Golden Eagles on offense as she finished the day 4-for-6 with two runs and five RBI's. Harris went 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs, while Dumas finished 2-for-4 with one run.
Brockport returns to action on Monday for a home SUNYAC doubleheader against New Paltz at 12 pm.
